Liothyronine : please could someone message me... - Thyroid UK
Liothyronine
Bardak,
If you post your recent thyroid results and ranges (figures in brackets after results) members will be able to advise whether a Levothyroxine dose increase might be better than adding T3. If you add T3 you will need to order FT3 tests periodically unless your GP will order them.
I'm just going to quote from a recent post of yours so others see your current situation and won't worry about whether liothyronine is right for you - it looks like it is...
Since total thyroidectomy in March this year I have been tested at least once a month. At the end of May my levels Were: Tsh 5.7 ft3 4.2 ft4 19.0 I was taking 125 mcg levothyroxine per day. I wasn't feeling well and couldn't stop putting on weight.
I managed to convince the endo that a small mix of liothyronine with levothyroxine might be helpful so he reluctantly agreed and prescribed 125 mcg levothyroxine and 2 x 5 mcg liothyronine daily (the liothyronine was 20 mcg tabs quartered!) After 2 weeks a test was done with following result: Tsh 0.25 ft3 7.6 ft4 22.9 the endo then immediately took me off liothyronine saying my result was "toxic". Strangely I felt the best I have for a long time and had list a little weight as well. I argued that a decrease in levothyroxine would be a better approach but endo was having none of it... So a month on 125 mcg levothyroxine I feel horrid and put on 5 kgs then a new blood test showing: Tsh 7.6 ft3 3.8 ft4 16.2 and now endo wants me to take 150 mcg levothyroxine!!! He has also said ft3 will no longer be tested only tsh and ft4 will be tested in future.... Omg I'm so depressed I tried to explain all this to the gp but he just folded his arms and said no way would he prescribe liothyronine. I feel like a cornered animal and the doctors are treating me luke a junky... I don't feel strong enough nor smart enough to take on the doctors with various tests coz they will wear me down like they already have.
Out of interest, had you taken your liothyronine dose the day they rested your blood resulting in that FT3 of 7.6? (Which was a little high - but not toxic - how melodramatic!)
thank you jazzw and yes I had taken my dose that day.
Ah, so it read artificially high! We generally advise here not to take your lio dose 12-24 hours before having a blood test because it will appear that your levels are higher than they are. Which it clearly did... Poor you - what a numpty doctor to overreact like that.
I'm hoping people are PM-ing you details of where to get T3 (I'm afraid it's not something I buy). Hopefully if you could get stable on it again you might be able to come clean to your doctor and get it prescribed again.
Pm'd you.
