Hi, I'm looking for supplement recommendations for Vit D, iron, folic acid and B12. What do others use please?
Supplement recommendations please: Hi, I'm... - Thyroid UK
Supplement recommendations please
You took the question from my fingertips. I need to start them as well since I just started my NDT yesterday. Thank you in advance for the information as well.
B12 - sublingual methylcobalamin, Solgar and Jarrows are popular with members here.
Folic acid is synthetic, look for Folate which is natural. If taking B12 you should take B Complex to keep B vits in balance. Thorne is a good one and contains Folate.
Iron - taking iron can cause upset tummy and constipation. The most gentle form is Iron Bisglycinate. Look for a brand containing Albion Ferrochel which is supposed to be the best. Solgar Gentle Iron is one. When taking iron also take Vit C 1000mg at the same time as it helps absorption. Take at least 4 hours away from thyroid meds.
Vit D3 needs to be taken with fat. You could get one with fat included in the form of olive oil. I use Doctors Best, it only has D3 and olive oil, nothing else. Also when taking vit D3 you should take Vit K2. Vit D aids the absorption of calcium and K2 ensures the calcium is directed to bones and teeth rather than soft tissues and arteries. You can get combined D3/K2.
Some good makes are Cytoplan and Nature's Own (same company), Lambert's and Nature's Best (same company), Nutri Advanced. Expensive but you get what you pay for.
Thank you very much. That's a lot of info to take in! I think I might just buy everything you suggest and save the hours of trawling!
Thank you so much. Do u buy them online or at a store. I am going to do the same, buy them all 👍
Solgar 1000 or 5000mcg??
Depends on how deficient you are. Have you had a B12 test?
My B12 is now on the 900s so I just want a maintenance dose so I take 1000mcg on 5 days a week. I may test again soon, if it goes over 1000 then I will reduce my maintenance dose.
You can't actually overdose on B12 as it is a water soluble vitamin and you will pee out any excess. However, there's no point in paying for what you don't need so don't go to the expense of the 5000mcg if the 1000mcg will do the job.
I'm assuming you've had tests and known your levels to know that you need to supplement. Always a good idea, particularly for the fat soluble vitamins like Vit D which get stored in the body.
Thank you so much. I'm going to do that now.
Morning, I take vitamin D in a spray form that I got from Amazon. I also take Magnesium which as well as helping with the condition, also helps aid a better sleep. I eat 3-4 Brazil nuts a day for my selenium but the biggest difference I found was to cut out gluten. I am currently not on any meds.
Just before I started to change my diet and including the vitamins my numbers were not good and the specialist wanted to see me back in 4 weeks. He was talking about me having surgery or radio iodine! I dragged out the appointment and went back after 5 1/2 weeks and he was amazed that my results are lowering and my symptoms so much better. next appt is 2 months away!
Good luck in whatever you choose. I didn't realise how beneficial vitamins could be. X
Is it worth privately sourcing b12 injections or are the oral as effective?
Thyroid people do tend to be low in vitamins and minerals and these are essential to convert the inactive T4 to the active T3 that every cell requires. Much food produced is depleting the soil and the minerals so it USA dmgood idea to supplement. I certainly felt better after supplementing but it doesn't happen over night but after several months but I expect we vary from each other as to what is our individual optimum dose. I agree you get what you pay pay for so some of the cheaper brands may not be as beneficial.
I take B12, folic acid(didn't realise it was synthetic though so may change), iron, D3, selenium, vitamin C, vitamin K2.
Zink is important to
I take multi vitamins - B12 - Thyroid Complex (just started) along with eltroxin 100mg so far so good and feeling good
