Hello I have seen people talking on here about above how does it help with hypothyroidism please? I have been to,d that omega 3 is supposed to help. I have had weeks of being really tired and exhausted and just need to get some help. Had my tests back and dr advised having 100mg thyroxine one day and 125 the next.

I am sorry you are having a rough time and sometimes it takes a while for levothyroxine to work for you.

Coconut oil/water can be helpful but we still need a decent thyroid hormone for every cell in our body.

Virgin Coconut oil is helpful for raising our metabolism whether hypo or not.

Marie-Anne,

Welcome to our forum and sorry to hear you feel unwell.

Being really tired and exhausted are classic symptoms of low thyroid hormone and could mean you are under medicated.

Depression, anxiety and panic attacks can also be caused by an imbalance of thyroid hormones and low/high cortisol which may happen if your adrenal glands are too stressed.

Post any recent test results complete with ranges (numbers in brackets) for members to comment.

Have you had thyroid antibodies TPOAb & TGAb tested as high levels can make you feel very unwell ?.

Thyroid hormones require optimal iron and nutrient levels to synthesis properly.

Ask your doctor to test Vit B12, Vit D, folate and ferritin and again post results.

A doctors "normal" may not be the same level as that which members have found most beneficial in aiding good thyroid function.

Omega-3 can help decrease inflammation and increase immunity. It can not be produced by the body so must be sort from diet and fish oils are thought to be better than flaxseed, chia or hempseed.

Most unsaturated vegetable oils contain soy which may negatively effect thyroid function. Coconut Oil is a saturated fat made up of medium-chain fatty acids and thought to aid good health and so thyroid function. (see link below)

I use coconut oil as it is much less susceptible to heat damage so can be used for stir fry, etc..

Coconut water is full of electrolytes so thought to easily hydrate the cells. However, it is high in potassium so don't drink too much.

Alternating your thyroxine pill between 100mcg and 125mcg is a common way of raising the dose by a little and it is important to take your pill on an empty stomach with a glass of water, 1 hour before food, 2 hours before supplements and 4 hours before calcium, iron or vit D supplements.

I hope you feel better soon

Coconut oil is not a reliable oil to have as it is causing farmers to slash and burn virgin forests.

The big culprit in slash and burn is the palm oil industry.  Currently touted as the healthiest liquid oil, you only have to check the labels on the products you buy in the supermarket to see just how widespread its use has become.

But you are right, coconut oil is having an environmental impact.  However there is a solution - get educated.  Don't just go for the cheapest or most glitzy product.  Buy organic as this helps ensure that the local ecology and people aren’t put at risk from chemical fertilizers and pesticides.  Buy Fair Trade because this requires farming methods to take environmental sustainability into account and farmers who are being paid more are less likely to overgrow monoculture crops and destroy local biodiversity.  And check out the business practices/supply chain of the producer.  Most coconut passes through brokers on its way to the bottling plant which means that anything, good or poor, can end up in the jar.

Don't stop with these 2 either, take a look at coffee or farmed fish (much more far reaching) or ....

But, in truth, it is a sad fact that if it isn't grown in your own back yard, modern farming methods and ever expanding consumer demand mean that everything you (as in 'we') buy nowadays has an increasingly negative environmental impact.
