Coconut oil has been very much in the media this week, and now I am wondering is it good or is it bad?
I have been using it for most everything for the past 3 years or so, my bad cholesterol is up, which doesn't particularly bother me, except that I have large yellow deposits around my eyes which I find ugly (xanthelasma).
Coconut oil does not contain cholesterol, so would not be responsible for the rise in your cholesterol. I can see absolutely not reason why coconut oil would be bad.
Note that as with most studies on "nutrition" we don't know why people ate what they ate (were they already ill?) We don't know what else they ate and we don't know how accurately they reported it.
The main complaint seems to be that coconut oil is made up of a huge amount of saturated fat. Some people, including some scientists, appear to believe that saturated fat that is swallowed ends up unaltered in your bloodstream, which is a bizarre idea. It's like saying that someone who drinks milk ends up with milk in their veins, or someone who eats potato ends up with potato in their veins.
Odd that I posted on a media headline story in both right and left leaning press which related to vaccines and disinformation and it was deleted for having nothing to do with thyroid( I clicked on all communities ) ,being political and inflammatory.
This post has no more to do with thyroid than mine , maybe not political except with a small p and it seems these days anything that is disagreed with by someone is inflammatory as that is how folk react - no proper debate.
There was no scientific evidence as why coconut oil is bad - just a bald statement. Certainly better than rapeseed oil which had to be specially modified to stop it being toxic, or sunflower oil etc (too high in mega 6s and PUFAs). Probably not as good as olive oil or flax seed oil if you want something for a salad. Saturated fat cannot be converted directly into cholesterol in the body. It is biochemically impossible - see drmalcolmkendrick.org for a explanation of the process. Ancel Keys has a lot to answer for.
