Hello! I've had my vitamin d results back and they are 26ng I am

Suffering hairloss and wondered if 26 is actually low or not and if anyone else has suffered hairloss. Should I supplement?

Thanks x

Abzieg, 26ng/ml is low, 50ng/ml is optimal. I don't think hairloss is connected to low vitD but decent vitD is essential for general health. There is a guide to dosing in the link below grassrootshealth.net/

Hi Abzieg

If you're low in VitD you're probably low in other vital minerals too....

low iron & biotin are often associated with hair loss, best get your iron levels checked before supplmenting & ferritin (stored iron), folate & B12 too J :D

Thanks I've had all of those.

Ferritin - 47

B12 - 411ng

Folate - 9.3 ng

All seems normal I guess?

B12 still borderline, I've seen posts recommend over 500 is essential to avoid neurological problems (even 1000 optimal) - an 'active B12' test is better - have a look at the pernicious anaemia site for more info - folate is connected. As labs/regions/countries vary please can you put the ranges too - J :D

Thankyou - I have actually started supplementing folate 400mcg and b12 1,000mcg just to bring the levels up a bit. :)

Abzieg, Ferritin under 70 can cause hairloss. Optimal ferritin is >100 to half way through range. Supplement iron with 500-1,000mg vitamin C to aid absorption and minimise constipation.

Take thyroid meds 4 hours away from iron and vitD.

I'd supplement 1,000mcg methylcobalamin to get B12 higher in range and take a B Complex vitamin to keep the other B vits balanced. Folate looks fine.

Thankyou but I tried supplementing iron prescription for 7 weeks and in the 6th week my hair went through a massive she's so I got scared and stopped. Perhalps iron doesn't agree with me. Or it lowered levels of other important things and made hair worse!

Also I have started

Supplementing b12 and folate but I've got my b6 levels back and they are

Through the roof high! So I don't want to use a b complex x

Abzieg, right, don't supplement B Complex when B6 is high.

What's wrong with supplementing b12 and folate? Is that not ok?

Clutter profile image
Clutter in reply to Abzieg

Abzieg, it's fine to supplement B12 and folate when they're low.

Abzieg, it takes months of supplementing to improve ferritin levels. It's low iron, not supplementing iron, which causes hair loss, and supplementing iron doesn't lower levels of other vitamins.

I just got

Worried.

Also I've hearts it causes constipation but it did the opposite for me! I'm

Not sure if there is something

Wrong with my gut that's causing all these vitamins to be low!

Abzieg, hypothyroidism can lower stomach acid and slow down motility which is why low vits and minerals are common in hypothyroid patients.

Thanks I've started to drink a couple of tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar as I hear this is good for low stomach acid

Abzieg, yes, if taken before meals it can raise stomach acid which aids digestion.

I don't think that taking undiluted vinegar is so good. I drink diluted cider vinegar for my gallstones.

I don't take undiluted I

Mix it with warm water and a bit of lemon. I don't think I could stomach undiluted!

try supplementing with magnesium gly b4 bed every night...I take two b4 bed, helps with sleep and keeps you regular.....it is awesome...and most people are deficient...also a enzyme to help with digestion with each meal helps....

Is it possible that you could have Coeliac Disease? this was the root cause of my low vitamins/minerals. After trying to improve levels for a year it turned out that I had CD and my gut was damaged by Coeliac antibodies. I didn't have the classic symptoms but "why was my body not absorbing properly?"

Abzieg profile image
Abzieg in reply to judburke

I've got he best diet and literally eat no wheat or gluten so I can't imagine if its that! Also I had a food intolerance test and it showed nothing :(

What a mystery then - Are you excluding all gluten? It is hidden in a lot of foods. I was horrified at what foods it is in when I first started GF.

Also, I know some people take PPI tablets for reflux and that can interfere with absorption apparently.

Good luck working out what is your root cause of it :)

I agree - When my ferritin is below 50 I get hair loss. When it is at least 80 for several weeks then it starts to improve but you have to be patient :)

I agree

I read that ferritin has to be 80 for hypo people for hair growth
