Okay after taking 50mcg of synthroid for a month I still feel crappy. Not even my biggest worry anymore. I've lost 20 pounds in the last three months and lost another pound the last two weeks. I would like to know if this has happened to anyone else with hoshimotos as I've had serious batteries of tests and they find nothing. Is this normal???
Severe weight loss: Okay after taking 50mcg of... - Thyroid UK
Severe weight loss
Funnygembunni, In hindsight I think my weight gain of 13kg in 6/8 months was probably the onset of Hashimoto's. I felt well and was pleased with the gain. A couple of years later I felt very unwell and lost 13kg in 10months. Eventually saw GP and had elevated antibodies but euthyroid bloods so no medication. If I'd known a gluten-free diet could be helpful I would have tried it. 9 months later Hashi symptoms resolved after a thyroidectomy for thyCa.
You've said thyroid levels have always been normal and unless they are low thyroxine isn't likely to make you feel any better and may make you feel worse if thyroid levels go too high. Have a thyroid blood test in a week or two to check levels and take Synthroid after the blood draw. Overmedication can cause weightloss.
Worn out adrenals can also cause weight loss (and loss of appetite)
Hello,
I have lost 18kg in 4 months and am still losing. I have been diagnosed with an Overactive Thyroid, am taking propranolol and now they want me to take methimazole as well. My TSH stays below 0.5 and my FT4 and FT3 are within the normal range (FT4 on the low end).
My symptoms seem to be a mixture of hyper and hypo, so I am not really sure what is going on.
I feel like the doctors have no sense of urgency or care for my condition and it is very frustrating.

My post is titiled: I am so confused. (So are my doctors)
DanteNXS, I asked on your Confused thread if you would post thyroid results and ranges. Please post them. Low TSH with FT4 and FT3 within range is NOT hyperthyroid and Methimazole will block thyroid and make you hypothyroid.
Clutter,
I did post my results, so I am not sure if you saw them or not, but if my low TSH and FT4, with normal FT3 are not considered Hyperthyroid, then I am wondering why my ENDO put me on Methimazole?
I also think the propranolol is causing my lightheadednesss, and fatigue.
Now you can see why I am so confused.

They put me on propranolol when this first started, they told me the dizziness was from migraine LOL. That medication dropped my
Blood pressure so low I almost crashed a car. Check what
Your blood pressure is.
for hyper you would have low TSH, high free t4 and high ft3.. a low TSH and low free's is a pituitary issue.
I mentioned that to my ENDO, but she said it wasn't.
What tests will confirm this?
i think you can google which hormones the pituitary and hypothalmus make and find the tests. If i felt better, i would do it. I'm sorry.
Here is a whole paper on Central Hypothyroidism:
press.endocrine.org/doi/10....
I know it will be heavy going, but if CH is a possibility, you will simply have to put in some time to reading and understanding.
You don't have to retain all the information!
I like the way the paper repeatedly refers to the “reflex TSH strategy” - which is a spot-on description and explains why CH is so easily missed.
What's your antibodies count? Stopping gluten helped me lowering my antibodies. Maybe if you post your blood results people will be able to help you further?
Getting blood results done today, TPO only says >600
Doesn't it have the ranges? My lab ranges say <50 normal. So if it's the same your antibodies are really high. In the beginning mine were in the 1000s with lots of work and help from this forum they are down to 79
Yea, my TPOs are very high. After a million years a year ago that's all they could find wrong with me. My doctor just increased my synthroid to 50mcg daily yesterday. We will see what happens. Still feel like I can't stand for long and my arms are tired for no apparent reason. Going to get a high dose vitamin D supplement today and see if I can get they up, hopefully it decreases these dizzy spells and fatigue
So sorry to hear that. Not good to feel this way. Lets see what it happens with the increase. But please keep reading and getting suggestions here. Try them out and see what works for you. Don't let the doctors play with your life. I was left at 50mcg for 10 years suffering adding different medication by gps but no increase nor change on my thyroxine. I thought I'd die. Now with all the supplements, NDT and being gluten free getting my life slowly back but still a long way to go.
you may be having absorption issues do to a bad gut. also, low cortisol will cause this. I would go to isabella wentz website and sign up for her newsletter. She addressed this just last week, but i didn't read it..sorry.
