My GP wrote for advice to Endo who suggested I add T3 to my levothyroxine. Another GP rang me to discuss my latest blood test results as my other GP is on holiday and she said she couldn't prescribe it and it had to be done by an Endo?
Can a GP prescribe T3?: My GP wrote for advice to... - Thyroid UK
Can a GP prescribe T3?
It is true that most GPs like to have advice from a specialsit when prescribing is outside their normal treatment pathway -ie NDT or the addition of T3. In your case the endocrinologist has written and recommended it should be added. Did the endocrinologist recommend actual dosages? It could the other GP was reluctant because they don't how to implement.
I once had a GP in my practise who refused a repeat prescription of T3 as the normal GP was away on holiday as he didn't believe in it!! He did write it in the end under duress but told me he wouldn't in future -to which I responded that maybe then he should ensure the prescription arrangements are in place so my health isn't compromised. Am only writing this to illustrate how fickle GPs can be!!
In your shoes I would ask for a copy of the letter written to the GP, contact the Endocrinologists secretary and explain what has happened. If it's a question that the endo didn't include a treatment protocol in their letter it could be that by rectifying this by a further letter that this GP will then prescribe or if there is an alternative GP in the practise they will. If that doesn't happen I would write a polite letter to the practise manager asking for clarification around the reasons why it isn't happening and expressing your concerns over the potential deterioration in your health that could happen as a consequence. Ask your letter to be put on your medical file.
I know this may seem hard to do but am afraid you may have to fight for your rights over this. One has to wonder why on earth they are not following an endocrinologists recommendations!!
Tiredchick, GPs can prescribe T3. Some CCGs insist on an endo recommendation first. The GP should have a look at your records and see how much T3 the endo recommended.
Rubbish! Any doctor can prescribe anything they want many won't because of the cost.
What a cop out! A GP can prescribe T3; whether they wish to is another matter, not least because it is very expensive.
My GP prescribes T3 but my endo said it is up to my GP if he will fund it because of the cost.
