NDT, also called Natural Dessicated Thyroid hormone has been in use from around 1892 (in a different form) and used up until the 1960's when levothyroxine and the blood tests were introduced. Since then the guidelines have gradually been tightened and today levothyroxine alone is the only one the guidelines of the BTA advise is to be prescribed. The have also made False Statements on the use of NDT. It is more expensive but, expensive, doesn't mean that people who cannot get well on the current regime should be denied a healthy lifestyle or, at the very least, a trial of one, two or 3 different ones as some suit us better than others.

It is not synthetic like levothyroxine and may be more conducive to human bodies being made from pigs or cows thyroid glands.

There is one which doesn't need a prescription and was invented by Dr Lowe of the USA. He died two years ago but his wife deals with requests and there have been some good comments about it.

The others are prescription only and these are details. Some GPs/Endos will prescribe but very few. They keep to the guidelines only.

Thank you so much for your help here...I shall probably go to the doctor and ask about T3 firstly. I really appreciate your help with this.

Email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org and ask for a copy of the Pulse Online article. Question 6 may help persuade your GP to add some T3 to a reduced T4 and how low your TSH can go. Another link

Shaws, I had the impression Armour and other U.S. brands could be bought over the Internet ( not tried as sticking for now with Levo ) but are you saying it is not possible to purchase without a prescription?

shawsAdministrator in reply toTreepie

It is not a recommendation of Thyroiduk.org to buy from the internet. It always better to have a relationship with a sympathetic doctor but due to the Guidelines of the British Thyroid Association and the Royal College of Physicians, it is nigh impossible to get a prescription for NDT. So some desperate people are forced to look elsewhere to recover their health which isn't ideal when not improving on levothyroxine.

Sometimes we have to try several alternatives before we find one that makes you feel well. Initially there can be disappointment when the alternative doesn't work as expected.

As most endos are useless and not everyone can afford a private doctor, even if they're near one, what choice do we have?

We have to get well by some other means which some have already done.

If you wish to have details from me (it is what I take for my hypothyroidism) message me.

I was told by my doctor they could not give me NDT but when I had my hospital appointment I explained how ill I was on levo and that was why I bought the NDT and showed him the tablets he was happy to give me on perscription .I was very lucky as he was very nice and understanding . I live in N Ireland so keep trying ,and I printed off the info on NDT from there web site show it was available on named patient basic and he was happy to look into it .

in reply toMaggiemay12

So do you have to pay for your 'named patient' scrips, Maggie?

BTW just in case anyone doesn't know, if you're on meds for life (which you are with thyroidism) then there is a form you get from your doctor and fill in to get prescription charges waived. You have to ask for it, then don't usually volunteer the information.

Afraid it does not apply simply because you are on meds for life. The official details are here:

nhsbsa.nhs.uk/1126.aspx

Doctors often do tell patients - certainly did for me and some other people..

Being for a named patient does not affect payment.
