Hi, I've been reading about NDT and would like to try it, are GPs in UK generally positive about it or will it be a slog to get it prescribed.
Thanks

You will most likely have to buy your own as to get an endo to prescribe it let alone a gp is near on impossible in my experience unfortunately. Good luck though xx
Hidden It is difficult to get NDT prescribed here although a few patients are lucky. It is an unlicensed medication and if you are lucky enough to find an NHS doctor willing to prescribe it then it would have to be on a 'named patient basis'. Very few doctors are willing because they have to take responsibility for any adverse events that occur. You might find a private doctor more willing but the cost of the prescription plus the NDT would be quite high.
There are some members who get it on prescription but most self source and self medicate. Self sourcing without prescription, mainly Thai NDT, is a lot cheaper and those who use it seem to do well.
I was able to find an endo in a hospital that offers NDT but only because they are part of a clinic specifically looking into alternatives to thyroid support through a kind of clinical study. It might help to call a few hospitals and see if they offer this.
It probably depends on where you are as well.
You won't get it prescribed. Gps don't care in the UK and have hardly any knowledge of anything thyroid related as only do two weeks training in med school! Some endos will prescribe.
That's why we are all on here to help each other😀
I will pm you where I get mine. You can also ask admin for a list of suppliers.
I don't live in the UK, but it seems incredibly difficult to get it prescribed there. I see a doctor in Belgium, one of the few European countries it would seem where NDT is legal and some doctors (mainly so called Barnes or Hertoghe doctors) prescribe it and where it's available in some pharmacies (prescription only). However, if you don't live nearby, you have to add travel expenses as well and, combined with the very high fees charged by those doctors and the cost of NDT (not reimbursed anywhere, as far as I know), it will end up very expensive. In that case, you had better order it yourself online as others have pointed out. Thai NDT is a fraction of the cost of prescription NDT in Belgium (several hundreds of €/£ per year).
I tried to get NDT but doctors wouldn't prescribe it or monitor my use of it
Thanks all for the responses, looks like prescription probably not an option, will look into the other sources.
If it's any consolation, I have been on Thai NDT for the past two years, with better results than I ever had on either Armour or Erfa. I was also wary at first, but I have never had any reason to doubt the quality or efficacy of Thai NDT drugs.
I also know people who take Mexican T3 and are very happy with it.
Good luck!
Thank you, it sounds very interesting. Don't like the thought of just feeling ok on Levothyroxine for the rest of my life.
Hi Anna69,
From writing my own post about NDT, I came across your reply to someone else's similiar question. Seems like we are all flogging dead horses so the saying goes with our GPs and medics. I've read about Thai NDT but wasnt so sure as Western countries, perhaps due to nervousness of regulations etc. If you feel well on it that's encouraging. What actual NDT and supplier to you use?I am on a limited budget so cannot spend a fortune but desperate to feel well again. I am on 100mcg of levo now and wouldnt know how much to use if the dosage rates arent the same. I would like to try it but nervous of messing things up further. Be grateful of your advice
