Is this hypo?

August

TSH 12.3

FT4 12.2

September

TSH 9.2

FT4 9.8

My GP wants to wait until I get FT4 under 9 which could take few months. Should I ask for 2nd opinion somewhere else?

Andrew,

Overt hypothyroidism is when TSH is >10 and FT4 and FT3 are below range. Subclinical hypothyroidism is TSH <10 with FT4 and FT3 within normal range. I imagine your FT4 range starts at 9.0.

If you have clinical symptoms I would definitely recommend seeing another GP for a second opinion. You could also ask for thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies to be tested. If they are positive it means you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) and most GPs would then commence Levothyroxine treatment when TSH is >5.

Scroll down to Guidelines and Treatment Options to read Dr. A. Toft's comments in Pulse Magazine thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_... If you want a copy of the article to show your GP email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org.uk

I can only speak from my own experience; when I was first daignosed my TSH was 8.0 and t4 was 9.0 after 4 weeks on 75 levo tsh1.2, t4 17.4, t3 4.22. and 4 weeks later is was tsh 0.84, t4.18 , t3 4.16. Three months later on this dose tsh.00.29, t4 20.02, (t3 not recorded) and by this time I was feeling very hyper. and had to reduce the dose to 50 levo with 75 on alternate days and I am still on 3 years later although sometimes I have to miss a 75 dose. If you are not happy I would go back to your dr. but I would give it a bit longer. How are you feeling and have you been checked for Hashi ? I don't have any antibodies so perhaps that might explain what happened to me as my reaction to levo seems to be very quick and very powerful. Best wishes, Jax

What difference does she think it's going to make? Ask her that? You are already way hypo and should have started treatment long ago. Is she a sadist and wants to see you suffer just a little bit more...

Definately get a 2nd opinion from someone with a brain!

Lots of luck and hugs, Grey
