Hi Everyone.
Wondering if anyone here has heard of or been tested for KPU. A genetic disorder of heme synthesis that occurs during periods of high stress. The net effect is a leaching of zinc and B6 from the body (along with other minerals) and a possible increase in copper retention. It causes a lot of symptoms, some of them overlapping with Hypothyroidism.
It is interesting to me that many of the nutrients to treat hypothyroidism/thyroid resistance are also the same as those used to treat KPU and high copper. Namely, zinc, selenium, B6, C, magnesium, manganese.
I think this may be of interest to those who may not be responding to treatment especially as the high copper and low zinc can inhibit thyroid action on the cellular level. The adrenals and thyroid are also very sensitive to high copper and we know adrenal health is paramount to thyroid health.
This condition comes on during periods of high stress and I wonder how many of us with CFS, Fibro, Hypothyroid who experienced stress/trauma before our symptoms came on could suffer from this. It may be a rational explanation for us who suffer from the "never well since..." phenomenon. I have heard so many stories of people who start with " I was young, healthy active until....or then...."
