I've read on another forum that a Dr in Manhattan advises his patients that they should take T3 at least a half an hour before eating protein OR 2 hours after eating protein (any kind: eggs, meat, chicken...) as protein inhibits T3 absorption. I thought I understood that mono T3 was unaffected by food intake, was I wrong?

T3 and eating protein
Hypnoteq,
I think it is less affected than T4, perhaps due to split dosing, but should still be taken on an empty stomach. While I would allow an hour after taking T4 before eating/drinking, I might only allow 30mins on T3. and while I allow two hours after eating I occasionally have a cuppa an hour after taking T3.
It didn't occur to me to bookmark the info back in the days I was on T4 monotherapy
Thanks Clutter.
Aah, if only we didn't have to bookmark any of it - either intellectually or virtually
Hypnoteq, Well aide memoires have always been necessary one way or another. I'm astonished though by the amount of info I absorbed during the brain fogged years which I'm now able to access. Gawd bless T3, I feel awakened
This is the advice of Dr John Low:-
Dr. Lowe: As a rule, our patients take thyroid hormone only once per day. An advantage of this one-per-day schedule is that it’s easier to find a window for good intestinal absorption—when the stomach or small intestine doesn’t contain food.
Most of our patients wait at least one hour after taking thyroid hormone before they eat. Or they wait at least two hours after eating before they take thyroid hormone. The two hour wait is a rough estimate of the time it takes for food to pass through the stomach and small intestine. It’s worth noting, however, that several factors can increase the time a patient should wait before taking thyroid hormone.

Thanks Shaws. I'm idly musing why the Md I mentioned referred to protein only. If only I could remember my biology classes........
Thyroid hormones are carried in our blood streams mostly bound to proteins. It is the tiny fraction that is not so bound that is the Free T4 or Free T3.
There is much sense in the idea that thyroid hormone absorption could be affected by protein.
Yesterday (I think) I pointed out in another response that gelatin (largely protein) can considerably affect absorption of thyroid hormone (T4 in that case).
I would like to see some good quality evidence of this before taking it as fact!
Rod
Thanks Rod. I missed the gelatin post but will check it out.
