Advice on results please..

Hi, this is my first post. I have been reading posts for the last few weeks and have learnt so much. Mainly to prepare myself for yet another trip to my doctor who makes me feel like a hypochondriac. I was diagnosed with hypo after the birth of my 2nd son 5 years ago (doc said nothing wrong just baby blues) but I fought for a test. I have been on 50g Levo. I have felt ok, however over the last 12 months have not. Major brain fog, lack of concentration, tired, muscular aches, weight gain (no change to my eating habits) intolerant, hot, headaches and acidy tummy. I asked for the full works.. T3 , T4, TSH, B12, Vit D, Folate, Ferritin. I have received my result and the doctor said no further action as all normal. She advised I must be depressed and has referred me to a councillor. I find this very frustrating as they way I feel is making me depressed. I just want to feel normal. My results are:

T3 3.9 (3.5-6.5)

T4 14.3 (11.5 - 22.7)

TSH 1.7 (0.4 - 5.5)

Folate 12.6 (5.4-24)

B12 294 (210-910)

Ferritin 114 (10-291)

Do these look ok? Regarding B12 I have started starting supplements, the doctor said no need but having read that thyroid uk site it says over 500. Also T3 at 3.9 I've read that your not converting properly if around this figure? I also at times feel like someone is squeezing my neck. I would be so grateful for any feedback.

Hi Louise, I am no expert but as your T3 and T 4 are both low, perhaps you just need more Levo. I had a blood test last year which showed low T 3 but high T4, indicating the Levo was not converting and just pooling in the blood. I think if I were you I would ask for a trial of more Levo first, because it is very difficult to get a GP to prescribe T 3. Alternatively ask for a referral to an endo, who, if he thinks it necessary, will be able to prescribe T3.

Thank you for your reply Hennerton. I just wish doctors were more understanding and not so robotic in 'all within range' I will ask for increase. I hear a lot about Dr Skinner and am contemplating seeing him.

I would recommend him, my gp is brilliant but just hasn't the experience of Armour as I think I am his only patient on it, Dr Skinner has a lot of experience of unusual thyroid problems that GP's can't or won't help with, I would try and see another GP and see how you get on as you will need a referral too see Dr Skinner. good luck and good health k x

Thank you. I have been around the surgery small family run. I'm sure they roll their eyes when I go in they told me I shouldn't read so much on the internet... I told them thyroid uk have been very helpful. Thanks for your reply Imp on the case X

I also wish doctors were more understanding .its my doctor thats making me depressed im so down at the mo with it all and getting nowhere .sorry to moan just wanted you to know your not alonein the way you feel .good luck xx

I agree, I always go into the surgery all strong and ready and come out red eyed and weak.. everything is always pushed towards depression but I believe only a sufferer understands. I am so glad I found this site. Its made me feel mentally better just knowing I'm not alone as you say. Your not moaning at all just releasing. How are your levels? X

To tell the truth iv asked for a print out twice and twice been told pc crashed or can i come back tomoro ( yesterday) so going tomoro will post them .hope everyones having a good day hugs to you all ( thank goodness for this site ) xx

Why do doctors make us more unwell by ignoring our clinical symptoms completely - they just do not know what they are and there are quite a few.

My suggestion is you email [e-mail] and ask for a copy of the Pulse Online article by Dr Toft, ex President of the British Thyroid Association and physician to the Queen while in Scotland. Highlight question 6 and send a copy to your GP, to read it and learn before your next appointment. She cannot dispute the advice. He recommends a TSH below 1 or even suppressed or the addition of T3 to a reduced T4 if still unwell.
