Pricking burning Itch

Hi

Does anyone get a sort of hot pricking burning itch which is really annoying, I seem to get in a lot on my back but also on of other places on my body, is it a symptom of hypothyroid, a side effect of the levo or could it be because I have low Vit D and B12?

Thankyou browny

Yeah sounds like what I have. I used to get the stingy back thing but hardly ever now. I get the pin prick thing sometimes still though.

I can safely say its been the worse symptoms in all the myriad of symptoms I've ever had. 14 years of it...... Although it was a lot worse back then!!!

Hi

Thanks for your reply, do you mind me asking which meds. you are on that have improved the symptoms

Thanks

sporty333 profile image
sporty333

well i was on no meds up until just over a year ago! And remember this started 14 years ago. It just slowly improved from it being constant back then.

heat helps me.....have you worked out what helps you yet?

lucylocks profile image
lucylocks in reply tosporty333

No not yet, the only thing I've noticed is I get it more during the evening and if the bed is cool when I get in that tends to help a bit so the complete opposite to you, do you feel your is connected to the thyroid?

sporty333 profile image
sporty333 in reply tolucylocks

yeah heat helps me! Sauna is the cure 99% of the time! If i get in anything but a HOT bath it starts it off again. God, at the beginning it was 10x worse and a living hell!

Thyroid related? i'm not sure. I'd guess more at it being adrenal related to be honest. I've had no thyroid support up until a year ago and it did improve in those 13 years.....

...oh and its got a name.....idiopathic urticaria. Basically the GP's don't know what it is and can't help! lol

That is the truth, my GP told me I had allergies, it did my head in badly.

I get it more in the evening too, but today it is all day, but more now because it is later in the day.

I get a prickling sensation on my scalp when I exercise sometimes. It's particularly bad when I go to spinning classes if I can't get right under the air conditioning. I think it's caused by over-heating. I never had this happen before I had my thyroid removed a few years ago. It's a really unpleasant feeling and I feel quite ill when it happens.

I also sit in the shade on holiday now rather than lying out in the sun. Again I think it's my body's instinctive way of stopping me from over-heating. I used to love sun-bathing and have only recently realised this is why I don't like to do it anymore!!!

Hi

Thanks for your reply

The feeling I get is very similiar to prickly heat but without the rash

Its interesting regardng sun bathing as I was exactly the same as you I use to love it but now I feel uncomfortable if I sit in the sun now

Is it just a new thing or have you had it for a long while? Reason I'm asking is I had the same thing, which had lasted about 2 weeks and whilst I was at the doc's for something else I happened to mention it, and it turned out to be Shingles. Just a thought.

lucylocks profile image
lucylocks in reply toblackqueen65

Hi

I had it since I was diagnoised with hypo so thought it was a symptom of it, it went away for a white but has come back again, but then again I have just had to increase my dose of levo

I had horrible itchy rash on my back about a year ago. Started up around 2 months after starting on levo. Nothing GP gave me worked. Ended up using Nelson's Calendula cream (after around four months of rash) which helped immensely.

Hi

I do not get a rash just skin feels hot with stingy pricking itch

I get this on my shins but have very dry skin, so can bleed if I scratch.

lilliput profile image

Should add that I've become allergic to some skin care. The cheaper stuff eg E45 still works for my body, but eg matching body lotion to match perfume doesn't. I also now allergy test hair dyes I've used for years, plus can only use cheap facial moisturisers. Shame as bought some more expensive ones with a gift card. Makes me itch like mad!

Hi

Yes I wonder if it's an allergy but only started when I was diagnoised hypo

Hi Browny

I have had this for nearly two years!!! I get the itch and the burning / stinging and sometimes all over but most of the time in my joints...... it is worse around period time probably due to hormones and body temp rising.

I also have a condition called Primary Billiary Cirrhosis which is another auto immune disease and was told that the itching it probably caused by build up of bile salts.

I have been detoxing my system but have noticed if I eat foods which are high in histamine like spinach, strawberry, raspberry then itching is worse.

I have been on sleeping meds for well over a year as itching / burning gets worse at night and this is the only way I can get sleep and be able to function and work.

It may be worth get a liver function test, along with Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, ferritin and folate checked too.

Hope this helps

Sx

Hi

Thanks for your reply, I have had all the the tests you recommended and all O.K. except Vit D low at 22 and Vit B12 377 so I am now taking both. It is interesting about the foods with high histamine I will start to watch if certain foods make it worse.

Regards browny

Hi

Just had a thought if my liver function test was normal would it rule out the Primary

Biliary Cirrhosis as the burning stinging itch sounds very much like yours

Kind regards

I think it might have something to do with what is happening in the muscles. This article talks about the subject but not maybe how it relates to thyroid issues but I have read that the thyroid does affect the way these react.

Have a read up on Gout, this also gives burning of the feet and hands as crystals start to form. Hope this helps

Well worth reading up on - my mum has just been diagnosed and she also has thyroid - fibromialgia, tinnitus gout and borderline b12

I get itch,it's always on the same place....my left shoulder blade....reading what you all put on he has surprised me,cos never thought it would be connected to my thyroid......l learnt over time ,information that lve found out, wheather it be from sites like this or others, yet we hear how dybithic, but never mention thyroid, yet lve got a medical exception certificate to.

I've always had to ,almost be consistent,to my needs where doctors have been considered, that cos they never listeners,or was bothered about me living well, lve just changed my doctors......that's the key finding g a good doc

Hi browny did you ever get to the bottom of the prickling itching burning ? As I have it now only been on levo for 8 weeks started on 25mcg now on 50mcg I did have it before when I was HYPER that was 10 years ago I have hashimotos and was fine for all those years ! Felt unwell thought hyper again but my bloods show hypo :( I have been having B12 injections for ages as I'm a coeliac as well and always was low and take VitD ! It's driving me mad as the prickling starts then itching then the awful burning inside my body and I can't sit still :(

I'm hoping you found the cause ?

Many thanks Lynn xxxxx

lucylocks in reply tolynnwin

Hi Lynn,

No I never did get to the bottom of it really.

I do still get it occasionally but not as severe.

Like you mine started after I started levo.

My daughter also got it when she started levo. but hers settled down.

Mine seems to flair up either when I need a dose increase or when I have increased the dose and it usually comes on six to eight weeks later.

I think it must be something to do with the thyroid levels in the blood.

I know from other posts on here that some people can be sensitive to the fillers in the tablets and it is advised to take a anti histamine, I think one hour before levo.

Why don't you post a new question about it and maybe other members can offer advice.

Sorry cannot be of more help, hope you find some answers soon.

Best wishes browny

Hi browny thank you so much for taking the time to reply :) I'm just waiting for my blood results to come back and hoping that I may need a increase or it's my b12 magnesium vitD or something ? If it doesn't ease I will pay bio lab in London for a full vitamin mineral profile ! As I finding this worse than the thyroid symptoms :( I did post it on here but some members think it's a rash which it's not and think the burning is from exercise I wished lol and prickling from a allergy :which it's not ( your post seemed the only one that I could relate too ! I hope it's just that I'm not optimal with my levo yet ? Hope both you and your daughter keep well ! Thank you again for your reply :)

Hi

I do not have a rash either, as I said mine came on approx. six to eight weeks after dose increase and you say you have been on levo. eight weeks so hopefully it will settle down shortly.

Good luck browny
