Can I take multi vitamins with iron with my levothyroxine?

I had my thyroid removed several years ago and have been taking 175mcg of levothyroxine for at least 5 years. I have recently decided to become a vegetarian, but am aware that I may not have enough iron in my diet, as I am feeling more tired than usual. Is it okay to take a multi vitamin with iron supplement?

The advice on what not to take with levothyroxine on the leaflets with my medication is confusing. I have taken different brands over the years and some leaflets mention not taking anything with calcium carbonate, which appears to be in nearly all multi vitamin supplements and others mention not taking iron supplements! I have found some multi vitamins with iron, which do not contain calcium carbonate.

Do you mean at the same time as your levo? If so, then no, there has to be a four hour gap between taking levo and any form of iron or calcium. You also have to seperate the iron and the calcium. Fun, isn't it!

Thanks Grey

I meant whether I could take them at all, so this is really helpful thank you. Calcium isn't listed within the nutritional information, so I don't think that should be an issue at least!

It's just so complicated!

Hugs to you too x

I'm not convinced calcium supplements are good anyway, kidney stones and all that, if you can have dairy products that's better, and please consider B12 deficiency if you are a vegetarian. J :D

Thanks J

I'm not worried about calcium as I have plenty of dairy products in my diet. The supplement I'm trying only has 40% of my RDA for B12 so I'll have to look into other dietry sources for that too! Hopefully I'll get it right eventually, otherwise I'll have to go back to eating meat! I was feeling pretty healthy before as I think my levo dosage is good and I've managed to pretty much stabilise with only the odd sympton when I'm tired or overdoing it.
