I've been reading a lot about the benefits of coconut oil for general health. Can anyone advise whether its ok to take with thyroxine?

Coconut oil
I have started to use coconut oil in my cooking and baking. I have even used it cooking Sunday roast. I also take caprylic acid for candida which is derived from coconut oil. I have had no difficulty with thyroxine

I began to use coconut oil, but found that everything tasted of coconut (not surprising) so stopped as while I like the taste occasionally (especially when cooking Asian dishes) I don't want it being the overwhelming flavour.
Or maybe I was doing something wrong?
It is possible to buy 'deodorised' coconut oil / butter. This means the taste and smell has been all but eliminated. 'Higher Nature' is one brand but there may be others.
No everything does taste of coconut. Luckily I like it and my family hasn't said anything about it. I may get tired of it though

Thanks Roslin, I like you want to start using in cooking etc. I will give it a go in that case. Thanks for the advice. X
It's fine. It is a natural oil but it must be Virgin Coconut oil. It increases your metabolism. Don't take anything till about an hour after taking meds.
Have been using organic virgin coconut oil for last two years, no problems, I particularly like it for my stir fries. There have even been reports that some people are finding it beneficial in the fight against alzheimers, interesting......
Now that is interesting! I remember a recipe for brain-fog chocolate that involved coconut oil. Apparently it crosses the blood-brain barrier more easily or something, but it's such a long time ago that I can't remember exactly!

nice recipes.
I am having trouble gettinginto messages. For more than 2 days now. I have reported it to healthunlocked but it is not yet fixed, so cannot access any. I assume it's the same for all Admins?
Meaning i can consume my levothyroxine n coconut oil at the same time? Or there must be intervals in between?
Welcome to our forum Airine. Levothyroxine must be taken alone, on an empty stomach so people usually take it when they get up, with one full glass of water and wait an hour before eating.
I'd take coconut oil apart from levo.
If you are having a blood test it must always be at the earliest, fasting, (you can drink water) and leave 24 hours between last dose and the test and take afterwads.
If I had to take any other medications, I always took them at lunch as most had to be taken with food.
You've posted a question on a 5-year old post so just in case a member has left the forum it might be best to ask a 'new' question so that answers will be up-to-date as things can change.
Also, if you expand in your profile about your thyroid history, members can look at it i.e. hypothyroid, hashimotos, thyroidectomy etc. so don't need to ask repeat questions.
You can also put when you were diagnosed? with what? dose you take and blood test results with ranges.
I have a teaspoon in my morning espresso and eat it out the jar as well Also lovely stirred into porridge
It can also be good for cholesterol
My daughter uses it all the time for her skin as a cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen. So much better than all those expensive products full of chemicals. It is also an antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and is the only oil to maintain its properties when heated.

Thank you all for the advice, I will definitely begin to use it. X
Its a good hair conditioner as well.
I too use it for cooking now, and pop a spoonful into my smoothies.
How much should you have per day to get proper benefits?
You can also use coconut oil as a moisturizer. I use it just as anyone would use lotion after a shower, all over, including my face. I use only organic coconut oil. That way you don't taste it, but your body is absorbing it. I also use a TBS in my morning hot rice cereal, instead of butter, but I put coconut flakes and chia seeds and dried cranberries and dried plums in it, so I get a little bit inside me every day. It's also great to use to stirfry potatoes, snow peas, etc. You can sub it for butter in glutenfree brownies, too. I find that not all brands are as coconutty as others, so you have to try different brands and decide which one suits you flavorwise. I take levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3) daily, so it is not contraindicated, but, as others have mentioned, you have to take your thyroid meds on an empty stomach and you must wait the prescribed amount of time before putting any food into your belly, so that rule applies to coconut oil as well. Coconut oil is so good for you. Find ways to work it in, in small amounts. In your recipes, instead of using all olive oil, all butter, all lard... consider using half coconut oil instead, that will reduce some of the flavor you don't like and keep some of the flavor you do like. And get completely away from canola oil, corn oil, safflower oil, and sunflower oil. All are GMO and very bad for thyroid sufferers.
I once put a a couple of teaspoons of coconut oil in my morning smoothie and promptly threw up!! Never used it since!

I would love to use it more but it's soooooo expensive! Has anyone found a virgin coconut oil that is well priced? I eke out my jar of Biona as it costs over £7!!!!!!
I can recommend the coconut milk drink of the Kara brand. Only a trace of coconut flavour, light and digestible, nice on cereals, for porridge, puddings, in Eastern cooking, you name it. Low in calories (about 24 per glass), with calcium, all of the benefits of the oil without being too fatty.
i'm afarid i found that using coconut oil in my smoothies etc just piled the weight on even quicker - despite being assured this wouldn't happen.
It semeed such a shame not to be able to use it so i tired again to replace it in cooking - but the same thing happened.
Strangely enough, after reading this post I went to my natural therapy clinic ( yes, to my acupuncturist, lol ) and they had for sale on the counter- yep, you guessed it... Coconoil! This is organic and fairtrade. so I bought a medium sized tub for £11 and cooked my dinner with it last night! It was a little coconutty, but bearable- think I might use it more on my skin, I guess it absorbs just as well that way. They have a website apparently. And I put a small amount in to do my spuds in and it seemed to expand into a huge amount, so i guess what people say about a little going a long way is true! Can't do any harm, anyway.
I've started to use it more as I have candida.
It is expensive though.
Here is a good article on 101 uses for it!
