Hi, I had a colonoscopy about 7 years ago and got the diverticular diagnosis. I have probably had IBS all my life with an "iffy" stomach, which has become more problematic as I've got older. I'm 69 now, so was probably the same age as you when I had the colonscopy. The consultant told me that most people over the age of 50 have diverticular to some degree - its a common ageing thing. It only really becomes serious if the diverticular become infected and it changes to diverticulitis. I'm one of the lucky people on this forum with no pain, and still able to manage my IBS with diet, and travel to places like Canada to see my son. I had to smile when you said you are only 61, obviously you are young at heart! I hope you can manage your IBS ok.
Hi there, I’m in the same position diagnosed with both at 58. Diverticular disease affects a lot of people as they age but that does not mean they suffer with diverticulitis which is when a pocket in the bowel becomes inflamed. I manage both conditions well through an anti inflammatory diet. Slippery Elm is recommended for diverticular disease and reduces any inflammation in the bowel. I am also gluten free which has helped the IBS a lot.
Hi,
Diverticular disease is something that doesn’t go away unfortunately. I was diagnosed aged 50. There’s so much information online and in support forums like this one. I manage mine on a daily basis, some days I’m ‘normal’, others not so good. About the only way to manage it is through trial & error, find out what foods suit you and which don’t. The brain and the gut are directly linked so stress and anxiety are super important to manage. Wishing you good health!
