Please help!!

Evening Everyone, I am a 40 yr old male and have just been diagnosed with IBS. For the past week I have been having awful abdominal pains and constipation, in fact I have had next to no sleep for a week because it's at it's worse late evening early hours of the morning. My doctor started me off on a course of Mebeverine & Fybogel and I really want to know how long these are likely to take to work (if at all, Buscopan didn't? And if there is anything I can do to try and ease the pain. It's embarrassing I am almost at the point of crying writing this because up until recently I had no real issues and this has just knocked me for 6.

I can't do anything please of the pain and I am just completely exhausted.

Thanks

Chris

Drink plenty of water and keep moving around

Thank you for the reply. I must of walked miles over the week trying to ease it. Haven’t been taking Mebeverine long but I’m not sure if it’s making the worse or not? Having read a few other posts it seems to take some time to get into your system?

Try lying down and massaging your colon. Videos on YouTube.

Hi

I was given mebeverine for Ibs and it took 14 days for it to really work. I was beside myself too as Buscopan was useless. But hang in there , it will work. I am pain free now and Bowels back to normal. Maybe ask for something to help you sleep.

Fingers crossed for you.

Hi Chris oh my how I suffered with sleep deprivation with ibsc for years and years.

It’s taken a very long time tried every diet and pill on the market.

These are the things that have got me in a good place sleeping well too.

I was given Linaclotide from the GP

I keep carbs to the minimum and any thing with flour in to the minimum

Don’t eat after 6 o’clock then the body is not concentrating on digesting but most of all 2 peppermint oil capsules every morning hope this helps Chris these things together I am in a good place

May I add at one point Chris my Ibs got so bad I ended up with biliary sepsis that was my worse place when people roll there eyes at me if I had taken a day off work because I simply had had no sleep and unable to function used to make me so angry and would of loved them to walk a day in my shoes I really do hope you get sorted

Thanks for everyone’s replies. I have started to notice a difference with the pain this morning, it’s there but I am not doubled over in pain so maybe the Mebeverine is starting to kick in 🤞

Hi Chris, I can only relate my own experience and am not qualified to give medical advice.

However, I found Fybogel made things far worse so I stopped it.

Mebeverine is very gentle and should help, just make sure to take it 20 mins before a meal.

If you need more fibre in your diet I’d suggest Psyllium Husks Fibre 500mg caps, one or two twice a day with food.

H&B sell them as do others.

I have also had great help from Senocalm caps, from Tesco or wherever.

One after each meal has greatly helped me.

Good luck.

Mike

Hi Chris I have to say buscopan and Mebeverine did nothing to help me at all! Have you tried foods on the fod map diet take fruit they suggest ie pineapple. Worth looking into I used to be able to eat anything. It could even be lactose intolerant you need to try one thing at a time. I am afraid it's trial and error. Good luck. Dr at hospital wanted me to to take 3 x10 mg of amitriplyne made me more relaxed but didn't stop the pain. Good luck

Hi Chris, is it constipation you have? I have constipation issues I have had them for a long time. I personally have experienced good things from buscopan . But the biggest change came when I went to see a gastroenterologist who put me on a one a day tablet of prucalopride which has been my life saver. I have the occasional issue now (bloating stomach cramps) and when this happens I use buscopan for as long as it takes to calm it down with some paracetamol and only drinking water as this is what I have advised to allow whatever triggers it to go through the system. I hope this helps
