Early morning abdominal pain /Diverticulitis/IBS.

Does anyone wake up every morning with pain all over tummy. I was diagnosed with severe Diverticular disease after Colonoscopy . It has never been suggested that I have IBS also, but I have all the symptoms. Last year I had bad diarrhoea for months and this changed at beginning of this year to constipation but with soft motions when I go , little bits at a time. My tummy never feels right even when I’ve been to the toilet about 2 or 3 times. I always have pain along lower pelvic area especially after weeing, which feels restricted. I’d like to know if anyone here suffers from these problems and if there is any medicine I can have. I’ve tried Buscopan but this almost stops urination altogether. I’ll be glad for any views. Thank you.

Hi. You could be talking about me. I have severe & extensive diverticulosis diagnosed by colonoscopy a few years ago & again by sigmoidoscopy at the beginning of this year following a flare up. I am never free from discomfort, which is worse first thing in the morning. This horrible condition rules my life as I never know how I am going to be from one day to the next. I am reluctant to plan anything. I get awful headaches along with other aches & pains, which I don’t know if these are connected or not. I do take Buscapan occasionally, but not sure if they help much.

I’m not much help to you but can definitely sympathise with you. Best wishes 🤗

Thank you for your reply. It does sound exactly like my life. Never know how I’m going to be each day and can’t arrange any appointments early in morning. Think we have to Just grin and bear it. It does help to know we’re not the only ones. Best wishes to you too.

I too have been diagnosed with ibs and diverticulosis. Recently had what I think was diverticuitis. Felt like I'd been kicked in the left side I try to avoid gluten as I think it may aggravate, and try to eat veg/nuts/fibre several times a week. Flare ups though, seem inevitable now and again. Does eventually calm but it can take over 3 weeks. Nasty disruptive problem, without a doubt.

Yes. I have the same. Sometimes pain is down either left or right . Sometimes goes round to back. Feels like a pulled muscle or mild cramp.

Hi I was told last year , I have diverticuler and IBS , I can suffer pains either side , I work towards keeping my bowels open ( a little veg each day ) I find it helps , it’s much worse , if I can’t go . It’s hard getting the balance, I also try very hard , not to let it rule my life , the hardest part for me , I can’t tolerate lots of food , I could before. Hope you feel better soon 🥰🥰xx

Sounds just like me. I do not have diverticulitis, but am a celiac with IBSC and BAM. I'm told BAM causes IBSD? but the scans do not lie. So there is nothing I can take for that. I go to bed dreading the morning. And cannot plan ahead as I don't know how I will be. I can't travel far as I fear needing the loo and being caught short. We can stop at a service station, but I can't go. Then 5 minutes later its Urgent!!!! This breaks my heart cos I can't visit my two children and grandson. Who hardly knows me.

hi yes I have had the same problems for years IBS c and diverticulitis - I never know what is going to happen each day - after a long time I now have an enema most mornings it is the one way I can have a reasonable life. Pains wake me up and then I take a microlax - gets rid of the pains and normally manage a bowel movement

That sounds tough. Do keep drinking lots of water and maybe something with electrolytes in it. I get mild pains first thing until I've weed and passed a few small motions which I think get trapped overnight.I've noticed it's quite important to drink all day and not try to catch up by having very little and then drinking lots in one go. I take ferocalm and am gluten free.

The gut brain axis is very strong in some people, especially those with IBS a associated issues. It's helpful to try the LowFodPlan, avoid gluten and dairy, drink plenty of water and ginger and/or digestive teas, speak to your doctor and ask if could start you on a SSRI such as Citalopram which have been shown to help with the gut/brain sensitivity to nerve pain, lastly try a product developed in the UK called Ferocalm which a special probiotic and is only active when the gut becomes stressed or inflammed (you can only buy it direct online), you need to try it for 8 weeks before deciding if not or to carry on with it, it does have a good success rate with reducing long term IBS and associated symptoms.

Hi all. Here in the UK my wife has been suffering almost constant medium to severe flare-ups. She has both Diverticular Disease and IBS. This was initially with diarrhea but this changed to constipation just as yours did.

After changing many drugs under our gp with no improvement we're now being helped by a nutritionist who is trying to treat the cause rather than the effect of this illness.

Early days yet but this together with the golden rules of 4 pints of water per day, high fibre via food and flaxseed when pain is not more than 6/10, very low fibre when 7/10 or over has not cured pain - you may never do that - but it gives us some hope that we're at least following a different path.

Good luck everyone and keep in touch. 👍🙂
