Prucalopride

I had an appointment with the gastroenterologist last week and she has advised that I have IBS-C. Previously she advised I had SIBO and was prescribed rifaximin. That antibiotic did not solve my problem. I am suffering with excessive gas, trapped wind and bloating. I have been on laxido for around two years as it appeared that I was constipated. I more recently had a rectal dysfunction which I think is related to the constipation. However, I’ve been using the Peristeen trans anal irrigation for the last three weeks and that seems to work.

I suspect it’s the laxative that’s causing the problems of gas but I don’t know. She has advised me to go on bisacodyl for a month and stop the laxido. I’m very nervous about taking this for that length of time. If that doesn’t work then she would prescribe Prucalopride and then Linaclotide if it failed. I’m now trying to wean myself off laxido by taking lower dosages (taking one sachet a day). I’m now taking 75% of a sachet daily then I’ll drop to 50% etc over the next couple of weeks. Do I need to do it this way please?

Do Prucalopride/Linaclotide stop excess gas and is one month on bisacodyl excessive please. Any experiences you have had in similar circumstances would be greatly appreciated.

I have to take linoclotide every mornong due to constipation caused by diverticular disease. Test have shown that I have sever narrowing of the sigmoid, insusseption and a rectocele. It does make me go, but I then have pain all day and excessive gas. It may work for you, everybodys different

Unfortunately everything with IBS is trial and error. What works for one doesn't always work for another, but trying things in a particular order and see what helps best is a good way to go.

Here is the info on bisacodyl:

patient.info/medicine/bisac...

Bisacodyl should only be used to provide short-term relief from constipation. If you are still constipated after using bisacodyl for five days, you should see your doctor.

I have no experience of laxido, but it could be contributing to gas. However, it's always best to go as far as you can with dietary measures for IBS-C, to see if increasing fibre helps.

Being able to go more regularly should help to reduce gas in the long run.

Thanks xjrs. I’m on a pretty high fibre diet and stopped taking gluten, milk products and it’s pretty much low FODMAP and low fermentation. It could be the laxido so I’ll continue reducing the amounts and see how it goes. The Peristeen seems to work ok for me at the moment so I’ve got that just in case.

I’ve also read that prucalopride should only be prescribed in the U.K. to women. Is this the case does anyone know pls

I've not heard of that before, but there is a lot you can find out on the internet for yourself.

If you want to specifically find out about this (or anything else), you can do explicit word searches.

For example in the google search box you can type:

prucalopride + women + only

This will search for articles that only contain those 3 words.

If you only want scientific medical papers instead of google.com you can type:

scholar.google.com/

in your browser bar.
