Fybogel and Laxido

I’ve been badly constipated for about a week now , have gone to the toilet on and off but am defo still not relieved. I was taking Fybogel for a few days, it worked but still wasn’t getting everything out so i am now trying Laxido. Today was my first day taking it and ive taken 3x sachets and 1 sachet of fybogel. Nothing has happened yet. I just wondered peoples experiences with both of these? Which one works faster? How long do they take to work?

Thanks :)

Apparently both these are safe for long term use, but I could never correlate Laxido with any effect. I find Senna does help (and I haven't found any evidence that long term use -at least of moderate amounts of it- is unsafe, despite the warnings). In emergency Dulcolax (sodium picosulphate) has a clear effect but it's the 'nuclear' option.

In addition to what you have taken I wonder if you have ever tried bisocodyl I'm not sure if you have to see a doctor to get them literally they will blow a hole in a wall as to put it.If you take too many ie 2,stomach cramps on occasion can be really bad so personally I take 1 very small tablet the night before. They definitely work but it's worth asking if your OK to take them. by your doctor..Good Luck!!..

Bisacodyl is available over the counter.

Going to get some Bisacodyl today! Do you recommend taking them before bed time?

They work differently. Fybogel loosens things up while Laxido bulks things up which is often what one needs to have something to push on. Although technically safe for long term use your body can get lazy and looses ability to push . For emergency, milk of magnesia good.

I had fybogel on prescription for years although it helped somewhat it didnt seem to get everything out it also didnt stop abdominal pain associated with IBS and caused loose stool . I ditched it and simply started taking a spoonful of milled flax works much better for me

I'm like you. I have been on fybogel for years on and off. It helps but often feel still full. My stools are very pale thanks to BAM and I can't take the meds for it cos of constipation. Where do you get milled flax and do you mean a teaspoon or dessert spoon or tablespoon?

Yes fybogel is not as good as flax as flax a has superior type of fibre not only has it helped in the loo it also has stopped pain in my abdomen . You can buy milled flax at health food stores like holland and barrett make sure its milled flax as if u take the whole seed u wont get any benefit from it as it will not be digested . Start off with a table spoon and go up to what works for you u can mix it with kefir or yoghurt or smoothies I no longer bother getting fybogel since i started taking flax All the best to you

If you soak the milled flaxseed overnight it is easier to digest. A massage of your tummy could help too.

Thanks for the advice. Only problem is I need to be lactose free and gluten free as I'm a celiac. So don't know what to take it with. Maybe I will ask at the health shop.

Flax is gluten free and kefir is fermented so no lactose im lactose intolerant myself

I have flax with porridge, you can buy gluten free porridge and use alternative milk. I use almond milk.

I have gluten free porridge every day for years now and have lactose free milk, but I have not yet tried the flax. Maybe my next move.

It worked so well for me I had to cut back on flaxseed it definitely got things moving. So I'd start of slowly see how you go.

Haven't tried much listed here outside of Laxido, but been using it for the past 4 months now, found that for me it helps when I've start to feel constipated, and start having trapped gas (IBS M). Takes a couple of days to kick in, and couple of satchets a day worked better when I felt backed up, but nothing else has given me any sort of relief.

If you're severely bunged up I find mixing 6 sachets in water, check amounts on instruction leaflet, and drink throughout the day helps. Otherwise I occasionally take dulcolax

Just warning about Milk of Magnesia - I take it occasionally and it does work, but I take it in the morning before breakfast, because it can work quite quickly in some people, so therefore not a good option to take at bedtime! I see another comment that Laxido bulks things up and Fybogel loosens - I've always been told it's the other way round, and that's been my experience. When I need to bulk things up a bit I add in a small amount of Fybogel, not the full dose, and it usually works well. Hope you manage to sort things out.

I was prescribed bisacodyl and Laxido by a hospital consultant to completely clear my bowels.I suffer from faecal incontinence otherwise..horrible.

Take ur laxative as normal at bed and bisacodyl 1 to start 2 is the maximum I can tolerate.

Feel free to ignore this because it’s not addressing your medication, I just wanted to recommend eating avocado. My Mum struggles with constipation and it really helps her to go!

Also would support the recommendation for flaxseeds with kefir! It helps me greatly and I normally add some fruit too. Just remember to up your water intake too. Good luck.

I take Dulcolax when constipated which works for me. However the pharmaceutical company SANOFI also make DulcoEase which is a stool softener to prevent getting constipated. It is available over the counter and can be taken when needed. Hope you feel better.

I found fybogel made me more constipated and laxido took several sachets to have an effect . What works for me is 3 tablespoons of omega seeds with kefir daily. It’s a mixture of linseed, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. The milled linseed (flaxseed) just tends to bulk it whereas the seeds are less likely to be digested and help with the stool passing through. That’s what works for me anyway, i take it daily and prior had horrendous constipation.

Hi, Isn't it a nightmare. I am in the same boat, I was recommended Bisacodyl by the hospital doctors, then Laxido during a flare-up. I find when taking Laxido 2-3 a day and was told you can take upto 8 a day for about 5 days then calm it down for my body to process them.

Good Luck x

Plus Bisacodyl is only £1 in savers in the UK. :)
