Differing Docs

My doctors disagree with one another - one says take Miralax every day. That was my gastroenterologist. Colo-rectal surgeon says - stop that right away, it's not meant for long term - take Metamucil.

Years ago I took Metamucil and ended up almost with a blockage. My problem is motility. Nothing moves.

Oddly enough, if I have a crisis type situation - like I get a phone call with very bad and disturbing news - bam - I'll be in the bathroom almost immediately. Which lends me to believe it is neuro-or nerve related.

I'm stuck between 2 docs. And now I'm doing nothing - but suffering.

Hmm ... I take Miralax every day, on the recommendation of my gastroenterologist. Works great. They're both osmotic laxatives, so I'm not sure why one is fine but the other is not.

Miralax is a laxative - but Metamucil is a fiber supplement. Sometimes can work against you if your primary concern is constipation or motility.

Hi, I am in the same situation as you, I have slow motility and my gastro put me on movicol (same as miralax) which I've been taking everyday for the last 3 years. I've heard bad things about it and I don't like the fact I have to take it basically for the rest of my life but without I block up, I still get partial blockages despite taking it if I eat too much fibre or take fibre supplements of any kind. My gastro refuses to send me to a colorectal specialist which is where i feel I should be, its so frustrating but I'm in the UK.Things have taken a slight turn for me now as I've recently had a positive fit test and some changes in bowel habit, I'm due to have a colonoscopy on Tuesday, the one thing I will look forward to is the clean out before, would be nice not to be full of stool for a change x

I had found this great colorectal surgeon - and she did a "look see" in the rectum and just saw hemerrhoids - however, she said two things. First was - you know I'm not a gastroenterologist - I'm a surgeon, we operate. Second was upon hearing I had been taking Miralax daily - stop that today. Switch to metamucil. Metamucil would form a rock in my system. So now I look like an obstinate patient. I had a "perfect" colonoscopy 6 years ago - with a note of past diverticululosis and "striations" - but it was perfectly fine, even though I have dealt with severe constipation all my life - even as a child. I had one sigmoid as a 20-something (45 years ago) and the doctor told me I had a circuitous colon so when I had the full colonoscopy I warned him abbout that - and he said to me later - your colon is fine - no "circuitous" ! Ha! They also did an upper endoscope which was clear. I since had my gallbladder out for small stones - uncomplicated.

It's such a nightmare having slow transit, I had a hysterectomy last April for fibroids and they found endo sticking my bowel to my uterus, so I have that complication on top, I do wonder if it has grown back on my bowel causing the changes, may even be the cause of my slow transit. Have you been given prucalopride/motegrity to try?

You really should not use Miralax as it really is bad for you. It causes neurological problems which we already have enough of. There is a Facebook group of like a 100 K users complaining how awful Miralax is. There is a very detailed article in the Epoch Times saying how really bad it is. It kills all your friendly bacteria in 3 days according to a study done at Stamford university. It caused my husband to lose a lot of weight he could not afford to lose. I had to give him Sofran for the nausea which made his constipation worse. Once he stopped the Miralax he also stopped the throwing up his food.

It's the Polyethylene Glycol in the miralax. Same thing that is in anti-freeze. There is lactulose which my hubby got switched too. It's non habit forming. Ask for something else then miralax. I see on the Parkinsons website that their are many options.

Facebook, Epoch Times, Samford (i.e., not Stanford) ... Are there any more reliable sources on this? Miralax works like a charm for me.

I meant Stanford. If you are happy with it , I did my duty. I warned you. The Epoch Times article was very comprehensive with a lot of links. Look it up
