Colonoscopy

I have Ibs d/c/m I have fecal incontinence and cannot control it as it is mushy. My sister and brother have Ibs and they have had polyps removed. My sister had small ones and a large one removed recently. The consultant told her that if she had left it a few more months it would have definitely been cancerous. My GP is trying to get me a colonoscopy but the hospital have refused because my FIT test was negative. My sisters was negative too but she has had 3 colonoscopies and other tests so why can't I. My family and friends are worried as I'm not getting checked and so many people are being misdiagnosed. Thanks for listening.

Hi, can you speak to the consultant or their secretary and explain your sister’s situation or say there’s a family history? It doesn’t seem right they won’t check you out. Otherwise maybe a second opinion?

I hope your GP can persuade the hospital.

I have spoken to the Gastrologist at Walsall Manor I have an appointment on 7th August to see a Colectoral Surgeon then I will demand a Colonoscopy if no luck I will have to see about a private Colonoscopy . My sister has got to be checked regularly now due to the polyps.

You have done the right thing and if other avenues fail you a private Colonoscopy is the only option for peace of mind. Good Luck

I would think on the basis of having a close family history (siblings) with bowel issues, plus your sister with pre-cancerous polyps, you have definitely got a right to demand a colonoscopy. Even though your FIT test was negative. I hope your specialist can get this sorted for you.

As your FIT test was negative you probably have nothing to worry about. It takes 10 years or more for precancerous polyps to turn cancerous. Most polyps are harmless but I understand your anxiety. I have had several precancerous polyps removed. Going all the way round is very painful for some of us. I would ask for a sigmoidoscopy where they go over halfway round. It is less painful and most polyps and cancers are found in the lower section. Picked up going half way round. If any polyps are found there harmless or harmful, they will do a full colonoscopy. A sigmoidoscopy is cheaper and safer and I suspect they will agree to this. I mainly have sigmoidoscopies to check me, and a colonoscopy if a polyp is found. Good luck.

The one that suits me was Co amoxiclav. It helped a grear deal. Then, a few years later the chronic d ,gas ,cramps, returned. It respond again to the same antibiotic . They thought I had SIBO, .or a bowel infection due to diverticulitis. Last year I had an infected gall bladder due to stones, and it turned into sepsis.l had a range of intravenous antibiotics , and when the infection went I had my gall bladder out. I have been great since. Hopefully they will find the cause of your problem

Hi DollymaeJust read your post and realise you and I have a lot in common. If you remember we spoke a while back about how we couldn't tolerate statins. I also have ibs for forever and I'm the same age as you. Have you had any luck getting your colonoscopy and have you found a solution to your high cholesterol?

Hi Gingers hope you are OK I have been referred to another hospital for the Colonoscopy and I have been referred to a Colectoral Surgeon in August. I havn't found anything for cholesterol and GP hasn't mentioned it either. Probably when I have another blood test they will mention it if its still high. I have bad leg pain at the moment I have Fibromyalgia so I'm not taking statins . Thank you for asking.x
