Hi, I have shocking wind when I have an IBS flare up, I’ve tried peppermint oil capsules and peppermint tea but they don’t seem to help for long. Does anyone have any suggestions what to try? Thanks

There are a number of OTC meds you can try at the local chemist's. Give em a try, and see what works for you. Personally, I like anything that has simethicone in it.
Thanks for replying. Unfortunately I can’t take anything with simeticone in it as I take meds for underactive thyroid and they clash but I will speak to pharmacist. I would have done it sooner but find it embarrassing to talk about!
You can take simethicone but it has to be taken at least 4 hours away from thyroxine.
Hi, some things to try that help me. Try massaging your pelvic area pushing in a light downward motion. Also, try bringing your knees up to your chest.
I use Buscopan IBS and peppermint oil capsules. I also use a hot water bottle and try to adapt my diet to 'less windy' foods to more soluble fibre such as potatoes (without skins) fruit and veg (also without skins) and oat based food is fine but avoid insoluble fibre like bran, whole grain/whole wheat breads, cereals and brown rice! You can look up soluble fibre and it will give you ideas....hope this helps. It is a real bind having bad wind with an IBS flare - (in my case it could be IBS or IBD) but regardless, I have suffered the past 5/6 weeks and only now am seeing what I hope is the tail end (mind the pun) of my flare.
thanks for all your replies. I’ll give your suggestions a try, it’s all trial and error I suppose.
Hi. I’ve tried various remedies for this but have actually found the inexpensive, no frills Boots Wind Relief tablets to be very helpful.
I have ibs C with shocking wind also and I believe I have tight pelvic muscles due years of constipation and the force of trying to poop. I do take simethicone if need be. As you can't have it have you tried pelvic exercise for a tight pelvic. I've recently started doing this I have found I have much less gas and much less constipation. I struggle with peppermint as I have acid reflux they repeat on me terribly so I rely on hot water bottle and simethicone on bad days although they are at the moment getting less and less. I hope you find some help , maybe it's time to go back to see your gp
Old fashioned bicarb I find good
I eat things that don't produce gas such as FODMAP. Nothing else by mouth will help you as the wind is produced solely in your lower intestines. So peppermint oil and such are nice but not working. Also I massage my intestines, quite vigorously. Gotta feel the "bulbs" and also hear the gurgling. Lying down is best. Also "golf" my stomach by just expanding and contracting my floppy tummy and try to break wind. (I'm trying to say that no muscles or yoga expertise is needed todo this thing.) Walking in the afternoon helps plus nothing solid after 2 in the midday. I consider myself an expert on my own windy intestines as I jolt awake every night with this problem so my tips to you here are serious. My problem has a different cause though, my intestines are too long and crinkly which stops the food passing along when I lie down to sleep. With a flare up of your intestine lining I suggest you take a mug of warm bone broth as gelatine is easily digested and helps to repair the lining. I wish you well and lots of tooting to get rid of that wind. Let's make some music!
