IBS flaring since antibiotics

hi

Im a 73 year old woman suffering from bad gas pain since anti biotics

My IBS has been better since hypnosis. But it’s more C Now. Had Noro virus late December. Then a UTI. So antibiotics. Then bad sinus infection. More anti biotics.

Really messed up my digestive system.

more C. But the pain is wind. Anywhere I can hear it. But get sharp pain in my pelvic floor area. Even a pee can start it up. GP says will take time. But Buscopan not really helping.

I used to take Kolanticon. Think simethicone helped me. But gone off market.

Can anyone recommend something to calm intestinal gas please. And maybe a mild gentle laxative. I end up with D very quickly and stop them.

I empathise with everyone here it all creates anxiety which flares the gut brain awful

Ty

Have you thought of taking a probiotic such as Alflorex (which I have heard good things about, concerning IBS) a member here "xjrs" knows a lot about it. Or maybe try "Symprove" also recommended for IBS.

The antibiotics have knackered your microbiome by the sound of it?

Wind pains...I sometimes get those and it's really painful, but mine pass usually with massaging my colon right, up, across, and then down on the left. A warm bath helps, and I usually do the massage in the bath. Then I let out the wind most often.

Light walking can sometimes help.

Rennie do "Deflatine" but I don't know how good that is as I never took it.

I have IBS -D mainly, but sometimes it flips to "C", often because I have come down a bit too heavy on the D, and missed the sweet spot in between both! I have a bit of C right now because I had a D flare the last few days and overdid it with Tormentil tincture and hard boiled eggs & white rice. So this evening for dinner I am having a bit more fibre, but I bet you I will overdo that as well and end up with the D again. It's so hard keeping a balance, especially when hungry when I could literally eat anything.

Have you tried small doses of something like Fybogel? (you need to put this with water, and drink plenty of water too.)

But for myself, I find some veggies will do the trick rather than taking a laxative. What helps in a more natural way are foods like carrots, beetroot (if C is quite bad) and some greens. Brown rice or a bit of wholegrain toast are gentler but I try not to go overboard with that. Just a bit can help the next morning.

A note on avoiding sinus infections if you're prone to them:daily sinus wash in dissolvable sachets made by Neilmed which are easily available in Boots etc. And to avoid UTIs I apply a course of Ovestin every four or five months. That too, I believe, is available OTC these days, but ask your doc to prescribe. Antibiotics are just awful for IBS so prevention better than cure.

thank you. Yes I use wash and steroid spray. First sinus I’ve had in many years. This winter has hit me hard in many ways. Fibro hates everything. And grandkids bring everything 🤪.

Neil Med is something everyone can use. Have not had a sinus infection for 20 years. Great product.

I really feel for your problems. I'm IBS/divertic/hiatus hernia person. I am absolutely fed up to back teeth with gas/noises/grumbles. I to take buscapam at times, but lately seems to increases gas at times. My wife a years back had a bout of community acquired phumonia, leading both of us in our local hospital same time. She had antibiotics, and had to take them for a week after returning home. But had a bad tummy after, and to this day, her gut never been the same. But never been diagnosed with IBS. In my case I just try an avoid any gas producing foods. Over the counter wind eze sometimes helps, but only partly. I hope you find a way to restrict your issues. We're both just in our seventies to

thank you. I’ve had IBS since my teens. It’s in my family. Never occurred to me Buscopan might cause gas. I’m on 4x a day. Take care.

Buscapam has been my only medicine for years. it usually helps. But was on Alverine citrate about 9 years ago. But that was useless. It actually gave me increased wind. When i tackled my doctor over it, she said , yes it can produce wind, "so you prescribed it for wind, now your saying it produces wind" , So you can take them off. my prescriptions please...... Buscapam used to get rid of the gas. But now Im older, it doesnt have the same effect on me like say, 10 years ago. Im not allowed Peppermint capsules. the oil is astringent, it gives many people heartburn. Im on omeprazole once a week to keep acid under control. 4 a day is a lot though. If I have a bad flare up I will take 2 morning 1 miday and 1 evening, but thats it, I would never take another dose like that next day. unless im still really bad. Must recognise some medications the body gets used to, and should not be used every day if you can help it. In CT scan rooms, Buscapam injections to calm gut while scan is taken, is strictly controlled on the dosage, I think you are taking far too many, but thats just my opinion. LOL 😆

ah well since Kolanticon vanished. This has been my only option. I often forget and skip doses. But I can feel worse without. Since the antibiotics. Nothing Is helping. Including probiotics.

I have heard Symprove is very good Alexander Burke was on This Morning with these symptoms and she says Symprove was her saviour. It is not cheap but worth a try. I am using Alflorex chewable tablets recommended by consultants it is helping with my IBS symptoms. Hope this can help you too .x

Mebeverine (Colofac) seems to work for my wife, who has IBS-C. Antibiotics can play havoc with the gut flora, but you may find it corrects itself after a while (I read somewhere that bacteria “hide” in the appendix, and repopulate the gut after the A/Bs have gone).

Antibiotics may have caused a gut bacterial imbalance which are giving you these symptoms. A 3 month trial of Alflorex probiotic may help with this. Once your symptoms have died down, it's a case of eating as diverse a diet as possible including whole grains and as much different coloured veg and fruit as you are able to, so you build up the good bugs again by feeding them.

If you need to be on antibiotics at any point in future, take Saccharomyces Boulardii, which is a beneficial yeast. It helps to protect your microbiome whilst on antibiotics. The reason it is so effective is that since it is a yeast and doesn't consist of bacteria, antibiotics won't affect it, so it can do its job. You can take 2 Saccharomyces Boulardii capsules after a couple of mouthfuls of food at breakfast and at dinner whilst taking antibiotics and for 2 weeks to a month afterwards. If you start to become constipated on Saccharomyces Boulardii, this suggests that it has or is doing its job and it might be possible to come off of them. Probiotics can be taken whilst on antibiotics in addition, but they need to be taken at least 2 hours before your next antibiotic dose and 2 hours after your previous antibiotic dose, for them to have any chance of helping you. These can be taken for 1-3 months afterwards too.

Have you tried magnesium as a laxative? It’s a natural osmotic laxative . I take Now Magnesium caps , they have helped my constipation.

Pan Yan,

Simethicone

amazon.com/s?k=simethicone&...

Kolanticon has been discontinued, and I can't find it on Amazon US either.

It really annoys me when there's something that works, isn't harmful to most people, and then it gets discontinued and that's that. We usually get fobbed off with something that doesn't work as well.

I had the same problem with something I used to be able to get in any chemist. Suddenly it disappeared (years ago now) I found it on the US Amazon site, opened an account there, bought it, and had it shipped. Yes, it cost me a lot more and took a while to arrive but at least I got what I needed. That wasn't an IBS medicine though. It was an insect bite cream.

it’s supposed to be coming back. Got a new PL code. New manufacturer. But still no sign. It worked well for me. I list my Frovatriptan. Migard. For my migraines sane time. Been very difficult.

I’ve had the same issue after antibiotics and have tried everything. What really works for me is drinking Kefir daily and taking a probiotic such as ‘Optibac Probiotic for those on antibiotics’. When not on antibiotics I take a lower strength probiotic, but have found you need to try different ones to see what works best for you. I used to find that after a course of antibiotics I’d get UTIs and sinus infections afterwards, but the Kefir and probiotics have stopped that. Every time I have an IBS flare up I start drinking Kefir as well as taking peppermint oil capsules, I find the pain and bloating settle down within a few hours.
