Magnesium citrate

Does anyone on here take Magnesium citrate long-term? I started taking it just before Xmas after finding a recommendation on here & it has definitely helped with constipation. Having done a bit more research with Mr. Google I am a bit worried that prolonged use can have side effects.

I've been taking it for about a year with no side effects but everyone's body is different so really only you can tell what's right for you.

I have IBSM so when I'm on a D phase I reduce the amount I take or stop it all together as it can have a loosening effect. When I'm on a C phase I increase it to get things moving again.

Have you noticed that multi vitamin tabs often contain this if you peel back the label for more info you would be surprised how much is in the. I always think if you can buy it over the counter it can't be that strong.

Think you mean magnesium stereate which is a filler not citrate. Two different things

That's interesting. Perhaps I should invest in a jar of multi-vitamins & do away with the five or six vitamins I already take.

I don't take a multi vitamin so I haven't noticed I'm afraid. I do know that it's an important nutrient that people on restricted diets often lack but I can't remember where I read that

Thanks for your reply. It has helped me with my C problem much more so than taking Laxido or other laxatives. I've been having backache for the last few weeks & worried (as we all do) that it could be something more serious & be caused by something I am taking.

Magnesium vitreous is this in tablet form and if so what kind and how many do you take . I’m on laxido but find it ok but would like to try something else for constipation . Just always scared to try thinks .

I take magnesium citrate, don't know about vitreous. The recommended dose is 3 tabs per day (Solgar brand) but I only take 2 which works OK for me. I sometimes also take a tbsp of psyllium husk on my cereal. Try it for a while & see how you get on.

Magnesium oxide is an ingredient in the multivitamin I take as well as the stereate. However it just a general one rather than one of the main ones listed. I have recently been taking Magnesium Citrate 100mg as it helps with tiredness and fatigue a well as supporting bones and teeth and it does seem the help a little with my IBS-D. It’s not a large dose and I haven’t noticed any side effects. I also take a little milled flaxseed, the dark stuff rather than the golden linseed and this has helped too. It’s a fine balance not to overdo this and cause the opposite effect!

I have used Solgar Magnesium Citrate, and take two, sometimes three capsules. It helps with IBS C hugely ! If I take more than 2 capsules I must stay in the next morning or risk mishaps but it beats constipation.

Hi SallyW22. I have tried many recommendations for IBS C over the years & I must say Mag Citrate has been the best thing I have tried so far. I only ever take 2 tabs, I think this is the recommended dose .

I tried laxatives but too harsh, milk of magnesia was good but very unpredictable and tended to work when I didn't want it too!

Moggiedee, there are other forms of magnesium that , while not as laxative leaning as citrate, provide your daily requirement. The krispin link offers helpful infomation. The importance of adequate magnesium becomes clearer as it is needed to activate vitamin D and thiamine (vitamin B1). Activated thiamine is critical for proper brain, vagus nerve and gut function and to activate vitamin B6. However, anti thiamine factors diminish or destroy thiamine. A comprehensive list can be found in the stuttersence link. The remaining links bring activated thiamine's role in the gut to life as the vagus nerve connects it to the brain where the brain, for example controls the sphincter valves. I hope this encourages you to further research the other functions of the vagus nerve and the importance of thiamine in the brain. Always consult your health care professional before using any supplement.
