I’m 28F with IBS D. Officially diagnosed 4-5 years ago but had symptoms for years before.
I’ve never made big changes to my diet as I found stress was my biggest trigger- working from home has helped me a lot! However, after speaking to a friend this week, I realised I have learnt to live with my symptoms and just put up with it. I have taken peppermint oil tablets and deflatine on ad hoc occasions when I’ve been bloated. They help a bit with the gassiness.
Anyway - the question! I’ve seen a bit about probiotics online and Aflorex has mostly good reviews and scientific backing.
Have you tried Aflorex? How did you get on? Or have you tried any other probiotics? I’m worried about any initial side effects too.
Thanks 😊

I have probiotics Mindlinx BioCare. It helps for gut and was recommended by homeopath. It’s been life saver for me. Since I start taking it all my symptoms are gone I take before bed time. It truly made a difference and I will keep taking it all the time. It doesn’t harm because it’s natural bacteria so it can be taken all the time.
Hi Redturtle, I’ve found a recommended list of probiotics for different conditions that is worth checking out, it unfortunately seems to be American so most of them are not available here in uk, but u can check the bacteria strains in similar products to ensure they will be the most effective for you.
Hi Redturtle, I have tried Alflorex and Symprove, neither of which did anything for my symptoms. However, I have heard that other people swear by them so I think it will just be a case of trying it for yourself and seeing if it works. With regards to the initial side effects, I didn't have any with Symprove, but I did get some stomach pains with Alflorex, which these went away after a week. Unfortunately none of my other symptoms did!
Hi xjrs, I'm looking for advice on probiotics. Sorry, I know yours is an old post. Did you have any side effects initially? Just started Acidophilus and its making the stools worse rather than better. Did yours take a while to settle? Thanks
Just had a thought, if your biggest trigger is stress then zenflore might be a good one to look into as well. It is made by the same people as Aflorex but it is aimed at stress relief.
Thank you! I find my baseline symptoms are constant if that makes sense and then stress or anxiety cause them to get a lot worse. I’ve also been looking at hypnotherapy as an option
Yes that makes perfect sense. I'm in a similar boat, only it is certain foods that make it worse rather than stress. Let me know if you decide to go for hypnotherapy and if so how you get on x
First Aflorex tablet I took coincided with a bad day but not sure it was the Aflorex. I decided it wasn't worth the risk -even after shelling out over £30. I started on Symprove a week ago and that coincided with significant improvement in my IBS and certainly better sleeping.
But it's so hard to be sure what works as about the same time I stared on 7.5mg mirtazipine (which had neither the immediate 'hit' not the morning fug beyond the first time of taking), and was also starting to get somewhere with a CBT therapist to sort sleep.
It's unlikely that Symprove could make a difference so fast; certainly there's no downside and I'll post again a week after my free trial month runs out!
Hi, I'm taking Alflorx for years it's great for the bloating, you must take them on an empty stomach for best results, either last at night or I take mine in the morning, and to get the benefits you need to be on them for at least 3 months, I also have IBS D they are natural so no side effects, I also take 1 Imodium instant after a bowel movement which helps, I do this every day, I hope this helps you 😊
