Probiotic caused me diarrhea!

Hello,

I have been taking probiotic spec for the gut, 25 billion live bacteria; it also includes digestive aid and vegan calcium.

It’s been roughly 3 months and for the past 2-3 weeks I started to get diarrhea. At first thought it was my medication or vitamin? Someone mentioned that probiotics can cause diarrhea. I’ve stopped taking probiotic for 2 days and my diarrhea has stopped.

Anyone else has experienced diarrhea from taking probiotics? Normally going to the loo is not a problem for me. It was helping me with my IBS: the fullness and pain I used to get from eating anything.

I may look for a smaller size of bacteria rather than 25 billion?

Any brands that are good?

Increase yourr fibre intake...probiotics only feed on fibre and if there isnt much then you get loose stools...also using one with a combined digestive enzyme can do this too.Best fibre for this problem are green bananas....which do not get digested in the stomach but in the lower pipework...where the perobiotic feed.Probiotics love fibre...it is the best way to boost your microbiome.

You can also use plain white rice for a day or two if this gets out of hand if you cannot stop the loo trips.Hope this helps you.

Thanks for your feedback. Yes I do eat a lot of bananas and greens. Mainly vegetables and lean beans like black eye peas and quinoa. I can’t eat rice unfortunately makes me fatigue the next day. I’ve started to eat gf crackers and do eat lots gf bread. Has been okay up until now.

I’ve stopped and don’t get loose stools.

Make sure that the bananas are on the green side, as Jomico said. My dietician has also told me to eat greenish bananas only. If you don't enjoy them. use them in smoothies. They taste fine that way.

IBS doesn't like beans of any type. Peas are even worse. Bananas should be eaten in moderation. IBS sufferers usually find they can't tolerate fibre and the only well tolerated greens is spinach. White rice and Quinoa might make IBS worse. Basmati rice is best.

Hello, I can eat black eye beans if I soak for a couple of hours. I tend to get gassy or used to be full with anything I eat but probiotics has helped with the fullness. I eat quite a bit of kale and frozen green beans. The fodmap diet I do follow but also adapt to food I can eat.

I also started to think banana makes me feel fatigue the next day? Not just rice.

Yes, probiotic yogurts give me a really bad stomach with d and makes me feel nauseous and bloated. I also can’t eat much veg, fruit or whole meal bread either as it does the same. All the things I love and are good for us and I just can’t eat them.

Grapes make me bloat. Honestly, IBS is a nightmare! Doctors don’t seem to have the answer to support patients, well, with me anyway. I suffer with functional heartburn (reflux symptoms) constantly 24/7 and they say antidepressants should help. It’s been 4 weeks and no improvement. If it doesn’t improve then it can’t be FH? I had H pylori last year and my stomach hasn’t been the same - I suffer with fatigue and getting headaches nearly every day.

I was given Citalopram and they honestly made my symptoms worse. After a chat with the doc, he said yes citralopram can cause diarrhoea! It seems even medication given to supposedly help can make us worse.

Yes it can but for sure it wasn’t that it was probiotics. I did have heartburn to start with but it goes after a few days, then other symptoms appear, eventually after four weeks should be fine. I’m on that now but hasn’t eased my reflux, sadly.

I had to try several probiotics before finding one which suits me. The microbiota of a person's gut varies widely and what may suit one person may not necessarily suit another. I have tried Optibac, Symprove, Aflorex and finally Floratrex. The latter seems to suit me and I use it along with Betaine HCL (for meals containing protein) and a digestive enzyme supplement. It's trial and error I'm afraid, but give each one at least 3 months before changing to another.

Hello, the probiotic I used had digestive aids too. I gave it over 3 months and was okay until recently. Yes, I’ve some of the ones you mentioned. The last is very expensive, don’t think I budget to that. I’ve also tried HCL, didn’t seem to make a difference. That’s if you got low acid in your stomach. Apparently my ph is fine according to ph I took back in 2019.

Also, I had HP last year and that is when IBS issues such as bloating, fatigue and pains started.

I had some issues because mine contained fructose prebiotic material which doesn't work for me - I've found Bio Care really good - you can call them for advise for your specific situation.

Yes bio care is good. I’m actually reconsidering it.
