bowel resection

Anyone had a bowel resection out there? Surgery itself doesn't seem like a big deal, but I was wondering:

- How long recovery takes

- What adjustments you need to make (esp. when it comes to eating & pooping

Thanks!

Hi there. If you look up MedlinePlus in US that should answer your questions or here in uk I would look up bowel resection NHS that gives you answers. Don't just google anything as that can worry you. Also your Consultant should explain everything. I do wish you luck and let us know how you get on. All the best from UK . Sue

Hi.Every case is different.

My wife had this procedure (major surgery) on our NHS.

She was in theatre for about 8-9 hours, and in hospital for 5 days.

Afterwards, movement was very painfull, particularly getting in and out of bed. The healing process took quite a few weeks, but she was able to reduce the strongest painkillers after about two weeks.

She was not advised to avoid any foods, so it was trial and error, she was also advised to take gentle laxatives afterwards if she had any problems and the transit of waste may be quicker, after the operation. She does however suffer from constipation.

All of this was over five years ago, and she has made a full recovery.

Good luck.

You said your wife was in surgery 8-9 hours? I’m asking because I am probably going to have this surgery in a few months.

It is a big deal, it's major surgery! Just make sure you research it well and that there are no alternatives. Good luck

Thanks all. I have done some credible research and also talked to my surgeon in detail. I apologize if I came off a little flippant about the surgery. It's just that I've got a ton of info on it, and definitely do realize that it is major surgery. Just wasn't finding much on recovery, after care & ensuing quality of life.

By the way, the surgery isn't immediate, just something very much on my radar. I also like to know exactly what to expect, find people who have actually experienced something incredibly helpful, and HealthUnlocked perhaps the best place around to get all that. Thanks again

You are very welcome. Remember that everyone handles surgery in a different way, but on a lighter note, she is now 100% ok.

Take care and good luck.

David.
