Baseline transit study

Hi ,

I’m having a baseline transit study on Friday & the consultant has let me carry on with the laxatives but has said to stop the Prucalopride, so he can hopefully get a better idea of what is happening in my colon .

I’m expecting things to slow & get bunged up and wondered if you needed to request strong laxatives at the hospital or from the doctor to help clear things after the procedure, has anyone had experience of what happens after the X ray is done , do they give you something to take ?

Help , my anxiety is kicking in & I’m panicking already 😬

Thank you

When I had the test, a couple of years ago, they found day 1, day 3 and day 5 pills still in my system (so that's a very slow transit). I just went back on my original regime of Prucalopride and numerous other laxatives, and within a couple of days, I was back to MY normal.

Thank you for letting me know , it looks like I may have to do the same ! If I’m not advised any differently by the consultant. Can I ask what treatment they gave you following the diagnosis for the slow transit please ?

It becomes a play-acting game really. I had to sit on the loo for 10 minutes (max) unless there was a BM (in which case I waited until I had finished {obviously}), at the same time every day. I had to drink a minimum of 2litres of water (plain) every day, eat 2 Kiwi fruits every day and walk for about 1 mile every day (not necessarily all at once). I also chose to add the following due to something I had found out:- On day 1 drink 1 can of diet Coca-Cola, on day 2 drink 2 cans of diet Coca-Cola, on day 3 drink 3 cans of diet Coca-Cola, on day 4 repeat from day 1. I would do this for two weeks (and still do), if it doesn't improve then I stop for 1 week and then start again. My biggest problem was that I didn't feel like eating meals at mealtimes because my stomach felt full up, so, I had to eat 2 slices of brown bread (toasted) for breakfast, a light lunch and a main meal in the evening.

It’s a nightmare isn’t it ? Did the hospital tell you to do all these things , did they offer any other medication or anything else for the slow transit ?

Meals are a problem when you’re constipated, I feel hungry but I’m wary about eating too much because it can leave you feeling horribly uncomfortable

I'm not sure if this will work for you or not but I suffer with IBS and I usually have to use the loo several times a day. I am on a very limited diet. I can't eat fruit so every day with my main meal I eat half a kilo of carrots. It's a lot but I like carrots so it's not a problem. The carrots keep everything naturally moving through the bowel without pain.

Thank you .I struggle with large amounts of fruit but small bits seem okay , I’ve just made some carrot soup & I agree with you carrots seem a safe standby & are full of fibre too . I add ginger & turmeric to the soup , they’re supposed to help with inflammation, anything’s worth a try if it helps .

Be careful with the ginger and turmeric. Turmeric can aggravate IBS and cause pain and some people can't tolerate ginger either. I certainly can't.

Thanks , I seem to be be okay with it in small quantities & ginger is better I find, when it’s cooked in foods rather than raw .

Hi I had a nuclear transit study over a week but had to also go back on the Monday after as it hadn't passed all the way through by the Friday. I was told to come of all laxatives to get a true test result which I did, I did have a flare up of overflow diarrhoea half way through the week and then got bunged up for a further 8 days. I was never given any advice as to clearing my bowel after the test just went back to my normal laxative dose and unfortunately I've been worse with overflow ever since, so I believe I should have been told to do a clear through before resuming my laxative.

Thank you for sharing , that’s awful they sent you home without giving you anything , I’ve emailed my consultant since & asked him to give me something strong to help move things as without the Prucalopride things have slowed .He’s done a prescription of sodium picosulphate sachets for me to collect at the hospital, hopefully they’ll help 🤞

I think I could do with some moviprep like I had before my colonoscopy, I felt so clear after that and had the flattest tummy I've had in a long while, that gave me a good 8 weeks before things got backed up again.

Yes I know what you mean , I can’t remember the last time my tummy was flat & I’m not overweight , in fact I’m underweight!I feel like I could do with colonic irrigation 😂

I’ve never had it but that feeling of emptiness I imagine it gives you , would be lovely !

Yes I'm the same underweight too because I react to a lot of foods.

I just can’t eat a lot without getting really uncomfortable , I used to love food & now I’m so worried about everything I eat

Hi there, it’s very awkward isn’t it you do not know what to do for the best. Your gp can prescribe some extra laxatives for you after to help clear the back log like picolax. Drink lots of fluids and exercise. I had to go to London for private anorectol tests after the transit study. Bit more complicated than just slow transit. Waiting for date for sacral nerve implant and might need full op if that does t work

I feel the need to go most of the time. I go little and often. Like very difficult marbles. I used to take lactose which helped but lately not working and I took only 5ml and had the runs? Not used it for months now back to usual little and often Very inconvenient and sometimes painful but just don't dare take anything now. Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing and get back to your normal rhythm. No drugs just soluble fibre.

Have you tried dulcoease ? It’s a stool softener , it may help with hard to pass ‘marbles ‘ , just a thought , but might help .

Thank you .I drink a lot of water & walk miles a day as I’m a do dog walking so that’s one thing & I’m cutting g down on food this week but having as much fibre as possible just to help move things 🙄

I’ve spoken to the consultant & he’s prescribed some sodium picosulphate sachets , so I’m hoping they will do the trick !

Can I ask you what a sacral nerve implant is for & what the full operation is ?

Gardenlover2020 profile image
Gardenlover2020 in reply to Rainbowblues

Thanks you & yes it is difficult, you’d think they’d explain what to do afterwards , rather than sending you home to fend for yourself !The consultant has prescribed some picosulphate sachets, so I hope they do the trick 🤞What is involved in a sacral nerve transplant. ?
