Hi all, it’s been a while since my last post so here goes. 18 months ago I had a colonoscopy. It was quite painful; the consultant had to give me a bit more sedative and afterwards he explained that I had a rather long colon which in turn had meant it had been a bit difficult to manoeuvre the scope. - hence the pain. He also had a camera down to look at my stomach and was diagnosed with inflammation. Was initially prescribed Ranitidine, but it was soon removed from the market. Instead, I was given Famotidine and I must say this has had a profound effect as I rarely get stomach pain now, which is amazing. However, I still get acute nausea which is wearing particularly as I get this every day. I’m now thinking about that colonoscopy and was wondering whether my elongated colon is the cause of the nausea. Can waste build up in the elongated colon causing this? I usually feel ok in the morning but during the course of the day, the nausea sets in and by mid afternoon I generally feel quite sick. I usually go to the loo in the morning; no real issues, sometimes I have to strain a bit or go back for a second go, but by and large motions are ok. I get a lot of wind which is uncomfortable. I aim to drink up to 3 ltrs of fluid per day, but I’ve been a bit remiss lately and probably drinking just a couple. I do try to exercise every day, but I’ve also been missing the odd day - working at home has become a little demanding.......but I know that is no excuse. I would appreciate any thoughts. It does seem to me that my IBS might actually be 2 physical issues: the inflammation (now addressed) and the elongated colon...which is causing the nausea and wind........thanks all. Paul

Redundant (tortuous colon)
Unless you perspire a lot, I am wondering if 3 liters of fluid is too much. Ask your MD.
I was diagnosed with IBS in 1996 and coped absolutely fine, just painful at times but fine other than that and some constipation. I had food poisoning in November 2018 and my IBS changed to IBS D with acute nausea. I was getting the nausea every day so I really feel for you as it's debilitating. I asked my doctor to refer me to a Dietician for the Low Fodmap Diet. I started the diet on 13 January 2020, I've not looked back. The most common causes seem to be stress and diet. I still keep a diet diary now.
Let's just say I feel so much better.
Very best of luck.
Could I just give a word of warning. I was on the Low FODMAP diet for 2 years and it worked wonderfully well. Then suddenly it stopped working. After that I talked to many people and as I had my gall-bladder removed 40 years ago - was told perhaps it was Malabsortion of Bile (MOB). So started taking Colestryamine and now am back to normal. Which is such a relief.
Thank you for this, very interesting and helpful as I've been following the low fodmap way of eating for a year and 5 months.🙏👍
Hi
I have IBS C and a tortuous colon diagnosed during a colonoscopy but my consultant explained that the elongated colon was more an effect of the constipation I had for years than a cause of my symptoms. I followed the low fodmap diet about 5 years ago and have reintroduced most things apart from wheat and lactose. I now know the wheat intolerance causes me stomach cramps, while the lactose intolerance causes bloating and nausea. Try the fodmap diet, as everyone is different in these things. There is light at the end of the tunnel (no pun intended) it just takes some patience as you work out what your bowel likes and doesn’t like.
Thank you ZaraAnn. I am on the low FODMAP diet, also, I don’t drink any milk or have dairy. It is just the constant nausea that is so wearing. I am on Drugs for the stomach inflammation which has worked, butI am so keen to stop this nausea......it’s so annoying/frustrating.
When I had colonoscopy the doctor said rather ominously ‘you have a loopy bowel’ .. I wonder if that’s the same thin? During the procedure the nurse had to press hard on my stomach. It hurt, and was very uncomfortable. They didn’t find anything wrong. I feel sick most days which is very miserable- I’ve just spoken to a dietician, whilst I’m doing most things that they would suggest I’ve not tried low fodmap , so she suggested I do that and keep food diary. Anything is worth a try. It’s definitely got worse as I’m getting older (66 this year). Hope you find a solution- if so please let us know!
That’s pretty well what happened to me. I know how you feel,I really do and can offer you the same sympathy as others do with me. I am already on the low FODMAP diet, for me it hasn’t really addressed the nausea, but goodness, I so hope it works for you. By the way, we are similar ages - although I know that this is not age related, if I discover something that helps I will certainly let you know. Thanks for your reply
Hi there, I too was diagnosed with a tortuous colon some years ago which explained why I have suffered with constipation all my life and has no doubt contributed to the ibs. I do have periods when I have nausea but this seems to resolve itself. I take Esomeprazole for indigestion and for the ibs I take Mebeverine and Amitryptilline. Constipation is a real issue for me and the consultant advised me never to get constipated - easier said than done!! So I take fairly large quantities of Laxido. I have started to take probiotics which seem to make me feel a lot better in myself and have helped the constipation to some degree but like most people who post the ibs is always a problem. Judging the right amount of Laxido is difficult and I have to really think what I am doing the next day! I also have a lot of wind - embarrassing !
Hi Diana, thank you for your reply. Yes, I have the wind issues too. My IBS’ seemed to encompass two distinct issues. The first was an inflammation of the stomach- which has been addressed through drugs, but the second is in the colon. I had dreadful constipation last year, but upped my fluid intake to just under 3 ltrs a day ( some would argue this is too much, but it works for me) and increased my exercise. I now go as regular as clockwork, but I do feel as if the ‘waste’ is just lying in my ‘droopy’ colon....and that does feel uncomfortable- I’m convinced this is why I feel so nauseous most of the time. I don’t take probiotics but do take multivitamins. Good luck with the Laxidio ,have a think about the fluid intake - it might help. Paul
Hi there. I have diverticular disease and often it mirrors IBS D. I found that drinking peppermint tea daily eventually has helped with wind and the crawling feeling in my guts. Took a while but now I drink it daily. I would recommend colofac and colpermin. I still have both with me if I go out (when!!! Covid ) . I still have loose motion and still get urgent must go NOW scenarios but much better than years ago.
I wish you all well. With love and understanding, take care and do what works for you xx
Hi, I was diagnosed with floppy elongated colon two weeks ago from a colonography test. I have had previous colonoscopies which were painful. I feel quite nauseous most days with a light headed faint feeling. Do you get that
