IBS-C Antibiotics Intolerance

I have IBS-C and also Diverticulosis and am constantly sufferingn from UTI ‘s. Does anyone with similar problems have really bad reactions to the Antibiotics given for UTI. I have been given Trimethorprim and have never felt so sick and tummy feels like it’s burning. I am very intolerant of all Antibiotics I have tried. Just wondering if anyone else has similar problems.

Hey Azaelea... :-)

I too have suffered due to "Diverticulosis" & I found that dietary changes can help, & did assist my efforts. Try removing food sthat are high in Lectins, as they produce spiky types of proteins that more easily penetrate the digestive tract, or so I was told...

Best wishes

I have exactly the same problems, IBS C and diverticulitis and I am on permanent antibiotics for chronic uti's as mine were once a month.

Trimethoprim and co amoxiclav are awful to the gut you need to tell the doctor and they should give you an alternative, the lab that tests the sample will indicate which antibiotics work on the bug you that get.

You could also ask to be referred to a urologist if your utis are that bad.

Good luck

I had a uti that lasted a year and tried many antibiotics and had bladder and gyne investigations which didn’t show up anything untoward. On recommendation of other older ladies started taking d mannose (holland&barret and Superdrug have it) and goodbye uti. You can take it routinely but I don’t need to and only do a short course if I feel a bit iffy.

tried d mannose and high strength cranberry they don't work for everyone, I have also been on hiprex and elmiron, and havehad various bladder treatments.

My uti, s originated from when I was in hospital in 2017 they gave me klebsiella, a super bug.

took 3yrs to get rid of that now my uti,s are e coli when I get them., as I am on prophylaxis nitrofurantoin permanently

I do take probiotics every day.

D -Mannose was prescribed for me when I had bladder discomfort but not a full blown infection. It worked really well and I have taken it now and then when experiencing twinges. Its available online for around $30 NZ (15 pounds UK).

If I am put on antibiotics for any reason I will take probiotics. It helps me. I have IBS fibromyalgia and am a celiac. My Doc recommends taking it 1 month on 1 month off. and try a variety. I still react to antibiotics but much milder symptoms.

Very similar to you. I have just finished 3 days of antibiotics for a UTI & moved on to a 7 day course for diverticulitis & I feel worse now than when I saw the doctor. I have lost my appetite, have got no energy or enthusiasm for anything & worryingly from my daily 5/6 cups of tea I have a job to manage one. Roll on Sunday when the tablets finish,

Oh I sympathise! I know exactly what you mean. I’ve been started on another antibiotic today, so hoping it doesn’t give me more nausea. I’m trying to eat a little, had scrambled eggs but not enjoyable. Loads and loads of glasses of water but difficult weeing. Wishing you a quick recovery .

hey! I got constant UTIs and I tried trimethoprim and it made me super nauseous. Only one that I can tolerate is keflex.

Firstly, get your doctor to prescribe Ovestin cream. Depending where you live you may not need a prescription. It acts as a barrier to uti bugs. I used to get far too many utis during pre menopause and menopause. Havent had any since using Ovestin.Secondly; this may not be the same as you but as I got older I developed an allergy to sulpha based drugs and Trimethoprim is one of them. With that particular one it started as stomach pain all night. With others it went straight to anaphylaxis and hospital visits for antidotes.

When the GP expressed concern about the types of antibiotics becoming less effective he prescribed others ....in the tetrocyclin family I think. My memory for the name may not be quite right.

I have no problem with Amoxiclav . It clears any gut infection for me, without any ill effect. It has been marvellous. I usually take probiotics for several weeks after taking it for a gut infection, or for pockets of inflammation, that have become bothersome. It was given to me for SIBO.

Thank you for your reply. Could I ask what Probiotics you use?

I tend to have a course of one probiotic for a few weeks then another make in order to add variety .For example, one of the optibac range, or bio360 or one I see on offer. I then stop taking them for a while. When I stop taking them I might have actimal before breakfast. I do enjoy kefir, kimchi, and natural bio yogurts too. I tend to eat lots of fruit and vedge and eat a colourful Mediterranean diet.

Thank you for your information. I think I should try this. I do eat lots of plain Greek Yogurt as I believe it is bio, similar to Kefir. Maybe I should get Kefir next shopping day. I do try to eat plenty of fruit too and keep off fried foods. Regards,Fran
