Sorry long post....Abdo pain Nov 2019 gastritis On going so HP test + given ABX therapy..still had pain given endoscopy 3 erosions found due to ? Previous ibuprofen use. Commenced omeprazole. Due to continued intermittent pain referred gastro.spoke with him Aug 2020 calprotectin 156 states this ok due to erosion felt pain due to IBS went lactose & mainly gluten free no caffeine no carbonated drinks low fodmap fairly settled. Last 4 weeks stools softer though sometimes constipated increased pain and gurgling poor sleep increased anxiety pain is above navel tends full and deep tends to come on early evening and can wake me (don't usually eat after six) most days. feel internally bloated but not notably visable buscapan gives headache commenced mebeverine yesterday but if anything pain worse peppermint does help a littlest ordered some capsules. Saw GP yesterday no lumps of bumps felt with abdo exam to repeat caprotectin and stool sample for blood. Bloods taken ((including CA125 but had ovaries removed 2017)

Feel so down over this want to be normal and worry it's something else. Do these symptoms sound like IBS and any tips on how to manage!!

Many thanks

Did the HP treatment eradicate it? We’re you re tested?

Yes first diagnosed by bloods then retested via breath test was neg and same with endoscopy these were after ABX treatment. Convinced the treatment screwed up my stomach as problem since!

in reply to Georgie999

OMGOSH, I hope that is not the case. I’m getting close to finishing my treatment right now. Do you think that anxiety may be causing some of your symptoms? I have IBS and have had for the past 30 plus years. Anxiety puts my symptoms over the edge. What protocol of drugs did you use for HP treatment?

Georgie999 profile image
Georgie999 in reply to

Amox and clarithromycin .never had anxiety until had ovaries removed and yes I feel it plays a part 🤔

in reply to Georgie999

It sounds like IBS, in my opinion.

Think I've probably had it mildly for a few years (always good at burping etc!😉) had occasional bouts of abdo pain which again were overnight but put them down to heavy eating or drinking at the time (not touched alcohol since it all started) was not heavy drinker before maybe a few twice a month. Spose quite stressed what with covid (nurse in A&E) missing family etc hasn't helped just wish it was a definitive diagnosis with IBS as always worry could be something more sinister (though it's bad enough!)

in reply to Georgie999

So, docs have never said that it’s IBS? Seems that you’ve been checked over really well. I wouldn’t be overly concerned. My doc always says she is never concerned unless I have red flag symptoms like increasing abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, etc.

told in August by gastro probably IBS but I feel because symptoms change and evolve over time it's hard not to worry when things change. Like at the moment the last 3-4 weeks my pain has increased so I worry it's something new which increases my anxiety which increases symptoms but with my nurses head it probably started because I thought I could get away with eating a little bit extra cake or chocolate over Christmas (maybe quite a lot of chocolate!!) Oh and the creammm! Great after being lactose free for a year... I think if I kept nurses head on I would be ok and less anxious but lifes not like that 😁

in reply to Georgie999

Yes, with IBS, any changes to diet, anxious thoughts, etc. can really upset our digestion. For me, it’s any overindulgence of any kind. I’m really bothered by things like onions, broccoli, cauliflower, lentils, beans, etc. I so wish I could eat those things but I really pay if I do.

Your list of no no's sound very similar to mine I used to eat mushrooms every day but now can't touch them and just the slightest bit of onion hits me hard including onion powder as I discovered to my cost. but found Tesco vegan dark chocolate (in pink wrapper) is good for a chocolate hit now and then shame I didn't stick to that over Christmas! When erosion s were picked up stopped eating tomatoes and oranges will probably be ok now as on omprazole but scared to start in case causes pain so being totally ruled by it all at the moment. Anxiety is a wonderful thing!

🤔

in reply to Georgie999

Oh, onion powder is like dynamite for me! The pandemic certainly hasn’t helped. It’s given me more time to think and worry which is not good for people like me!

Can eat 1/4 of avocado but 1/2 will have me doubled up! stupid things like that no mangos or pears but can manage a small Apple used to live on fruit.Your so right about pandemic normally busy out and about seeing grandkids friends etc now I seem to focus on me and every little ache and pain instead!

I completely understand. It’s really frustrating. I just keep thinking about Spring (only 35 more days) and the end to this lockdown. I so want to feel better. Along with IBS, I’m being treated for H. Pylori and suffer from anxiety and depression. A perfect storm. Sending you best wishes. Feel well!

Good luck with your treatment am going to look at some probiotic meds see if that helps. Only started with anxiety when ovaries removed and menopause fully kicked in then abdo problems started Definitely connected and yes roll on spring a little sunshine always helps...Take care

HiThought I'd share this as i do low fodmap, lactose free milk, no caffeine or artificial sweetened drinks. Also have wheat gluten free bread. I read a post other day someone said gluten free products can cause constipation, gas. I didn't know this.I had terrible constipation, gas, bloated, gurgling. I stopped eating the free from bread and within 2 days feel so much better. Now opening bowel daily, gas reduced 90%. Gurgling, bloating much better.

Really hope your feeling better soon,

Take care

I know that feeling well. I feel like my symptoms have progressively got worse through lockdown. I miss my grandkids so much my anxiety is so much worse which definitely makes my symptoms worse.I'm thinking of asking my consultant to refer me to a dietician, get some expert advice instead of experimenting.

It is so hard to try and stay positive when your life is controlled by your health. Keep your chin up, stay strong

With you on that Beechview oh to live a normal life again covid's got a lot to answer to!. Just to say despite having pain at moment it has helped writing this down and chatting with others who know what it's like so will go to bed with a slightly less heavy heart. Will do more research into gluten tomorrow good luck with dietician sounds like a good plan.

Many thanks

Take care

And, the more I pay attention to symptoms, the worse they get. When distracted, not as bad. Our minds do so much!

Have you been tested for h pylori?

Georgie999 profile image
Georgie999 in reply to

Yes positive and treated with ABX then tested negative

in reply to Georgie999

How long ago was this

in reply to Georgie999

It can take several months to get over the lasting problems h pylori causes. It damages the gut lining

Try getting intolerance test just in case Endoscopy ,colonoscopy mri ct scan ,ask for them ,do you get acid reflux query hiatus hernia ,( pain above navel) lower gut pain ? Diverticular problems , and consider probiotics hope you find answer

Georgie999 profile image
Georgie999 in reply to Respo

On endoscopy she did say slight possibility of hernia but only faintly floppy and said would need barium swallow I determine but gastro didn't think it was relevant enough.GP said would wait for stool, blood and captivating results before ordering other tests.

Previous endoscopy showed gastric erosions, active gastrophy plus intestinal metaplasia this was done in Feb 2020

Any recommendations for probiotics?

Your pain could be due to the Omeprazole. All Proton pump inhibitors are the same. They caused me agonising stomach cramps and a complete loss of taste. I had them prescribed for stomach erosion and Duodenitis. I stopped taking them and within 36 hours all the pain subsided. I then took Zantac but these have now been withdrawn so I don't take anything. If I get indigestion I drink a glass of cold water or eat a biscuit and that seemes to do the trick. My advice to you is try stopping the Omeprazole for a little while and see what happens. One warning, if you stop an antacids the acid seems to fight back for a few days. Try to put up with it or take rennies or tums if it gets too acidy.
