IBS - Seems to have gone away since cutting out carbs and sugars....

I was just looking at this webpage, and wanted to share it:

High FODMAP foods list:

healthline.com/nutrition/fo...

But realized the best place to post it would be on the IBS forums, and then I thought momentarily about the fact that I have had zero IBS issues, since being diagnosed as Pre-Diabetic. And, I believe this to be because I have changed the way I eat, in an attempt to lose weight and lower my risk of becoming diabetic.

I started intermittent fasting (at first doing 16 hours of fasting and 8 hours of eating) and now I am doing 23 hours of fasting and 1 hour of eating, and sometimes even going well over 24 hours of fasting, and skipping eating all together, all the while cutting out all my carbs from breads, pastas, rice, and all sugars.

I started in May, and I have already lost 29 pounds (more than 2 stones in weight) and have not had even one incident of IBS, and believe me I suffered from IBS, and Diverticulitis. I have had no problems with my digestive track since eliminating all those food that produce blood sugar spikes.

I just hadn't thought about it until thinking about where to post this FODMAP link. I'm not entirely sure if it's the cutting out sugars that have helped me, the carbs, a combo of both or the intermittent fasting that have eliminated all of my digestive problems. Or, maybe it's because of the way that I am eating in general. Food for thought! Hmmm....but interesting to me, because what if others who suffer from IBS cut out sugars and carbs? Maybe it could help?

I have been posting on the Healthy Eating Forums, if you want to see what I have been eating, check out my posts, but mostly I eat like the Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet, or KETO, but not strictly at all.

Thanks for having me!

So impressive. Seriously well done. Gives me hope. Been doing keto and fasting for a year. Have big improvements but still have bad days and fatigue. Any more tips will be appreciated. Are you on Facebook?

Yes, I am. Send me a message. You can add me. I think the number one thing that helped me was cutting out carbs and sugars. And, every time I would go back and eat some rice or something, I would end up with a stuffy nose, pain all over in my joints, and tummy issues, so for me personally, I think my body is just too fed up with toxins, and sugars (sugars being another toxin of sorts) and so cutting those foods out has really helped so much.

I mostly eat these foods:

meat (fish, chicken, beef, etc.)

eggs (free range is best)

cheese (all kinds)

butter (grass-fed)

olives (black & green)

olive oils

nuts (all the nuts)

vegetables (but not many root veggies as they are all carb laden)

berries

Rarely fruit, and processed foods are a big no no. Some frozen veggie items I still will have but I always look at the labels.

I will have a piece of cake at a birthday if I want one, but I will feel weird and loopy from the sugar after.

I will have carbs when I eat pizza, the dough, but I usually limit these to less than once or twice a month, and I don't eat a lot, because I don't like how I feel afterwards.

I wish I liked olives. I keep reading how healthy they are. This looks like my diet, except for olives and meat. I stopped eating meat because it causes constipation for me. I can eat fish without a problem.

I've been doing vegan keto and fasting for 19 hours & eating for 5 hours since October and I feel a lot better. I'm still having digestive issues but I can manage them a lot easier.

I have been on a very low carb eating plan and intermittent fasting for over a year and have certainly lost weight, but my (as yet undiagnosed) digestive problems have begun during this time, so keto / low carb is not the solution for everyone's digestive issues.

It might be the fact that you’re eating a lot less food than you used to?

I find if I reduce my eating, my IBS disappears and when I slowly start eating more, it comes back!

I am with you. Fasting is important as it helped me. I was on a similar diet low more complex carbs like sweet potatoes I lost about 25 pounds. Started to reintroduced foods no dairy or soy though but little nuts and protein like canned tuna. I found a brand which doesn't have pea powder in it. Thanks for your post.

But remember you still need carbs in your diet as a keto diet can have an adverse effect on your kidneys. As a pre-diabetic or anyone for that matter diet changes should be monitored by a registered dietitian and have a consultation with your doctor. (Worked in a diabetes clinic for a while)
