IBS symptoms worse since colonoscopy

It's three days since I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy. I finally had a bowel movement today which I thought was good progress.

My IBS symptoms had almost cleared up some time before the procedure.

Now I find they've returned full force.

I had the procedures mainly for peace of mind as my IBS is anxiety aggravated, so I was happy with the clear results and thought well that's that then, now I know I'm fine, I'll get better.

So why am I now worse? I've stuck to my careful diet so I don't think it can be food related.

Im sitting here at 2.30 in the morning clutching a heat pad trying to ease the cramps.

I read that the prep can be a problem for IBS sufferers as it upsets our already sensitive stomachs.

Im just so depressed that after going through all that I'm now feeling worse.

Anyone else experience this? How long did it take for your stomach to recover from this? Did you take anything to help?

Hello Becky

I had a colonoscopy just over a week ago and I have been having few more pains in my colon and more gas build up and burping. My abdomen has been a bit more tender. Because I get random pains in diffrent parts of my colon and stabbing pains around my Cecum and the ileocecal valve, he took a few biopsies. But the Dr could not find any inflomation and everything looked fine. The Doctor examined me on Thursday and said it is a very intrusive procedure and can be painfull for a while I keep getting pains in the inner hip bone on both sides. The dr said it's where the colon runs and where the pain will be radiating from. I suffer from OCD/Anxiety and I think my Anxiety fuels my stomach issues. If your like me i tend to analyse every different feeling and symptom which makes my stomach and anxiety worse. I would give it a few days and rest and if you don't feel any better speak to a dr.🙂

Thank you so much for your reply. I haven't slept all night, I've been so anxious which makes the pain worse. Just so tired of this now. I thought an all clear result would mean my mind would feel more reassured and I'd get better. I never expected even more pain. They didn't warn me after the procedures about this.

Hi, sorry that you are suffering worse pain at the moment. I had a lot of pain and disturbed bowel for a week or so after both colonoscopy and CT colonography. In my case I have blamed the prep on both occasions as it does disrupt the system. Glad that you have had a clear result... it will settle down soon I hope.
