Maybe Gastritis?

About 7 months ago after a recent trip to the USA I had a bad bout of Gastroenteritis. A week or so afterwards I started to get bloating symptoms after eating. I also started taking Statins at this point due to high cholesterol.

I went to see GP who tested me for H.pylori bacteria which came back negative. GP gave me Lansaprazole to take. Felt a bit better so stopped taking them.

About a month ago I started to feel nauseous at various times throughout the day and also on occasion, mainly at night, produced a lot of wind.

Went back to GP as I thought it may be to do with me starting Statins so the GP told to stop taking Statins for 1 week.

This made no difference so GP said she thinks it could be a gastritis and prescribed 15mg Lansaprazole each morning. I’ve now been taking the Lansaprazole for nearly two weeks but not really noticed any significant difference.

Does anybody know if Lansaprazole will do the trick?

Thanks

Hello, I got gastritis on a US trip too, their diet is so high fat I couldn't cope with it. Statins can make your IBS go crazy, so you would need to get that under control. Lanzoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor which will reduce the acid in your stomach, and will probably fix it. But you must not stop taking it immediately when you feel better, it takes time to really calm stuff down. My guess is that 15 mg is not for you, and I would revisit your doctor. The other thing to do, is do not eat at all between meals (as this re-stimulates acid production) or at all after 7 pm, and get some multivitamins every day.

I’ve got chronic gastritis - confirmed by recent gastroscopy- and also pancreas and liver problems still being investigated by gastroenterology. I have discovered through researching triggers etc - that some of us actually have low stomach acid rather than high but the symptoms for both are the same.

One of the possible causes or outcomes of low stomach acid can be B12 deficiency - or even pernicious anaemia. If you have this then the last thing you need is a PPI medication such as Lansoperazole or any anti acid.

There is a simple test you can do for low or high stomach acid which you can find easily online, involving mixing quarter teaspoon of baking soda/ bicarb in small glass of water and drinking it on an empty stomach. Wait 3 minutes and if you produce a big burp then your stomach acid is high or normal. If no burp then you apparently have low stomach acid. It’s quite basic but harmless and pretty reliable. But you do need a week or two free of all anti acids for a reliable result.

If I were you I’d go back to the GP and request further investigations including blood tests for iron etc and possibly a gastroscopy. The advice here to not eat between meals may be reasonable if you have a healthy gut - but my gastroenterologist has instructed me to eat 5 small meals a day rather than 3 main meals.

It is confusing getting conflicting advice so best to talk this through with GP - but worth bearing in mind that PPI meds’ can bring on other problems by inhibiting the absorption of essential vitamins and nutrients - particularly B12. So please do your research and ask about this.
