Sharp pains

Hi everyone. I've been dealing with IBS for most of my life. It's been a mix of constipation and diarrhea. I'm currently in a two week flare up it seems which is highly unusual for me. I think it may have started with a new granola mix I was using but I've been pretty strict since then. I've been dealing with a bit of bowel discomfort and pain most days. Yesterday it came to a head after I had an egg. The pain felt like someone was inside my gut scraping with a knife and some cramping near the descending colon. I've tried explaining the pain which is difficult. So on top of the knife dragging pain, I've also been getting a weird pain near the belly button where it is sharp and feels like it's closer to the skin rattan than inside if that makes sense. I have an appointment with my GI in September but that seems like a long way away. Any ideas?

Hiya. Sorry to hear about your discomfort. It can be a real pain can't it. I wondered.. have you seen a Dietician? You mention seeing your GI. Are there specialised IBS gastroenterologists or do they all cover this subject? Thanks

Hello. My gastro doctor is a specialist. Did all the blood work and tests a couple years ago. My upcoming appointment is actually with a different gastro doctor. A nutritionist is actually a really good idea. I'm just at a loss for this new pain and discomfort. I'm just really afraid to even eat anything right now.

Yes I know how you feel. I'm seeing a Dietician who works with ibs patients. She is the person the gastroenterologists refer to for this. In hertfordshire

My joy does not have a special location, can sometimes feel like a knife in me, but the present favourite is very achey and 'winding' (as in takes wind right out of sales) in a diffuse area below belly button which is almost certainly coming from wind. "it's IBS".

I thing granola is a bit severe actually, I don't eat. All that lovely muesli, even porridge I have to be careful. Cornflakes probably safe, rice-based even better, boring I know.

sorry to hear about what you are going through.

Egg can be a real trigger for me too and can cause bad pain, as if I have been kicked in the stomach. I have avoided eggs for some months, which is disappointing as they are so useful. I have started introducing them again but have to be really careful.

Sometimes pain can be caused by trapped gas. Have you tried Rennie Deflatine to see if that gives you some relief?

Not yet. Is it over the counter? I'm starting to think this may be the culprit

Yes. Should be available in most supermarkets in the UK, though it does go through times when it can be difficult to get hold of. Though I've noticed you're in the US so not sure if available there. Look for products with Simethicone.

In my experience l can eat a tangerine one and not the next! I am fortunate that l am able to eat and drink almost anything l want. Having said that l am mindfully aware what alcohol and caffeine does to my body and mind. If eat/drink things in moderation l know I will be ok. If tried eating the same three days on the run I would probably take it out of my diet. When making a decision like this l also take into consideration how much stress and anxiety I am experiencing as this too plays its part in IBS flare ups!

Have you been checked for diverticular disease? I've been having diverticulitis flares a couple of times a year for 25 years and the pain is very similar to your description.

Yes i think it does sound like it could be diverticular disease of which i also have . Luckily i only had one case of inflammation that was in 2017/18 that was uncomplicated however i still get issues that connect with my IBS that will be lifelong

I don't think I have but it's something I'll bring up to my GI when I see her. I'm also looking into inflammatory bowel disease. I think I only did blood work for celiac and that came out negative.

You'd need a colonoscopy or virtual colonoscopy to confirm whether you have diverticular pockets. I hope you get some answers soon.

Hi, I sometimes get horrendous sharp pains with ibs and I’m pretty certain it’s trapped wind. I have experienced it behind the belly button but more recently it’s usually in my left side. Probably the bend in the colon where it can get trapped.x
