Excessive Burping

Hi there, I have found that over the past 4 months or so I am burping a lot more, and this can continue for hours at a time. Yes I have counted this on occasion and often reach over 500 a day! I do have SIBO and may have low stomach acid, which I think can cause this as food ferments but weirdly eating a Low Fodmap diet has not helped and even a glass of water or peppermint / ginger tea can set me off.

So, i am just wondering if others with excessive gas have found some relief other than diet / cutting out sugar and if so what has helped? Or can there be a cause unrelated to SIBO/low stomach acid? I have tested negative for h/pylori.

As you have had this problem for a long time, I suggest that you see a doctor. There are a number of conditions that could be the cause. Best not to try and guess!

Yeah i agree. I am back to see my gi consultant on 14 may but any tests will likely be in june or later. Everything on the nhs seems to take an age!

Yes I can relate to this I suffer from IBS and I'm constantly burping. Nothing really subsides it. I'll burp when I'm hungry, I'll burp when I'm full and I'll burp when I drink.

I am the same! Sometimes eating makes it worse, sometimes eating or drinking will settle it down. Makes no sense to me. I dont really understand why there is not really an effective treatment.

Hi Mssss - I found out that my problem was caused by SIBO (although I don't know why I developed SIBO in the first place). Treating it has helped a lot but I have not yet managed to eradicate it so still get ongoing symptoms but more like 1-2 a week than everyday.

I also burp excessively. All i was advised by gastro was coal tablets and they didnt help

First thing is to take mint tea every day and make sure you drink no fizzy juice. Then as well as that go to doc and see if you need some acid pills or not. It just might be that the excessive acid your stomach is producing could be the result of your diet. Either way, see the doc, and take mint tea, every day. xxx

It’s awful, isn’t it? And really frustrating for you, when you’ve tried so many things so relieve it. Hopefully your doctor will be able to tell you a bit more. I don’t suffer with this symptom of IBS personally, but my daughter has this at times. She’s found that eating to much at once makes it worse...so she tries to eat little and often. I’ve also noticed if she eats a bit too much cheese, it’s worse! X

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments and advice. I'll keep you posted once I have spoken to my specialist. it seems such a trivial problem (medically speaking) but with no effective treatment. I've not tried charcoal tablets yet so will give them a go - nothing to lose!

I used to burp so much I would play with it and try to say a whole sentence burping. So I know what you mean. I suggest you go down the digestion/Sibo road first. However if this one goes on and on, then you might consider other causes. Everyone is different, but mine was linked to discharging negative emotional energy, of all things!

I'd be interested in what you find. My girlfriend is constantly burping after eating. She tried proton pump inhibitors, but she had some bad side effects

PPI's made me worse, which is why I suspect i have low stomach acid rather than high - the symptoms are quite similar. I'd prefer to have a proper diagnosis through and not just chuck more treatments at it when not being sure what the problem is. So hopefully I'll get an endoscopy of something else to help show what is going on. I'll keep you posted but it will take a few months!

Charcoal capsules do seem to help reduce my burps. Especially when hungry.

That's good to know. Do they give you constipation? I have been hesitant to try them for that reason.

Fortunately no constipation for me. I do drink lots of water.
