Was wondering how to get tested for sibo and if this can cause really excessive wind that is extremely bad smelling, noisy stomach upon eating dairy and bloody stools with alot of bloating in the stomach. Also does it cause a high calprotectin result.Any advice will be most appreciated.

Thank you all.

please see your gp as soon as possible, bloody stools is not normal and needs investigating urgently, SIBO would not cause it.

Thank you I have seen my GP he has sent some stool samples off for testing and I have requested a referral to a gastroenterologist as I can't cope any more without knowing what is wrong.

That’s great but the gp should be sending you for urgent colonoscopy at the very least if you haven’t had one already

I'm too scared to have a colonoscopy I really hope somehow something can be found in another way. Maybe a sigmoidoscopy as they are meant to be slightly easier to get through. I am hopeful that something may show up in the stool tests but I have little faith as had them check a year ago. Every thing settled down after a course of antibiotics but then returned 7 months later and has been worse this time antibiotics did nothing in fact I'm not sure if the blood has got more since them.I will keep you posted soon as I have some news.

Thank you again and all the very best.

Hi I understand your fear, but don’t let it stop you getting checked out. I have had several colonoscopies with sedation they are quick procedures and life savers. Just tell them you are scared and they will support you. You must get checked out and the cause of the bleeding identified. Not knowing is far worse than suffering without knowing. Go back to your GP and ask for an urgent referral. At its best it could save your life and its worth it for a little bit of discomfort.

Thank you. I will speak to him about it all I am booked in on the 12th of this month as it gives this week time for the stool tests to all come back. If nothing shows up in them other than high calprotectin again I am going to ask for a scopy either the sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy then I can hopefully get on a path to treatment and hopefully stop all this daily worry.

I shall let you know what happens.

Best wishes to you all.

Sounds like you have dairy allergy like me. I do gut biome testing and had a bacteria called biophilia wadsworthia which produced hydrogen sulphide gas. It likes the western diet, saturated fat, particularly dairy. Then i developed dairy allergy and beef and pork while doing an allergy elimination diet and get horrific pain if i eat them. Tho before allergy diet i just had standard ibs symptoms (tho about once a year for few years before, if i ate lactose by mistake i got same abdominal pain and bad D and once with pork sausages too, but other times i ate cheese i was totally fine and didnt suspect dairy allergy). I have a lot of food intolerances but these take the biscuit, the pain is horrendous. can still eat 10g cheese per week but get gas after and some D. Tho i did recently find that Dr Gut helped a lot (from chemist) - it kills bad bacteria by transporting them out of the body. Took it twice when had stomach pain and pain went away within 5 mins. Highly recommend. Ive only taken it when needed (2 weekends) and the sulphur smelling gas has gone!! Maybe coincidence but it definatley helped the pain..

Cruciferous vegetables and garlic (fodmaps which i'm also intolerant too) are also hydrogen sulphide producers too that said on a ch4 program but i dont know much about that? Does anyone else? This bacteria i had likes saturate fat not veg but maybe the veg give it the sulphur part of the gas?

As far as I've heard from others, there is such a thing as Hydrogen Sulphide SIBO. That makes very smelly gas.

But SIBO does not normally cause bloody stools as far as I know.

However bloody stools CAN be caused by haemorrhoids, which are very unpleasant but not life threatening and can hopefully be dealt with. Haemorrhoids are more likely if you've had a history of constipation in your life, and straining to poop.

But, with high Calprotectin (which signifies some inflammation) plus blood in stools, the best option seems to be a colonoscopy, just to be on the safe side, and find out what's going on inside. Honestly, if you get a result which says you don't have bowel cancer, but have something else which can be easily treated , you will feel a lot less worry and anxiety.

It might be worth it to go through a few hours of bowel prep, drinking the laxative, and diarrhea from it as your gut gets a deep clean, then get an answer. At the least, it will clean out your gut for a fresh start. But not knowing must be nerve wracking. It's better to know, so that you can get on with a treatment plan. Or they will say "this is IBS" in which case there are some options that may help manage that.

Hi Sooty, I had a calprotectin result of 395, had all the symptoms you said apart from blood. My Gastro suspected Sibo, I was tested and came back Hydrogen positive for Sibo, I had a course of Rivaroxiban its a common antibiotic prescribed for Sibo. It worked well for me , I still have bowel flares but not the Sibo and Calprotectin normal reading. Hope this helps.
