Wind! Trumps! Farts!!!!

Oh my goodness what is it with IBS and wind?? I mean to the point I am passing ALL day long (not the normal 14-30times), I think I complete that before breakfast!!? Im even waking up in the night because of it?? And the smell! Blimey!! I must pass wind 50plus times a day?? Any advice on how to calm down wind will be greatfully appreciated?

I also get extremely loud internal grumbling that can be heard very easily and is super embarrassing!!

Fed up of this IBS and all it's associated issues ! I thought going to to toilet numerous times a day was bad enough, but now with this wind on top, I've seriously had enough!!

Xxxx

I have found cutting down on dairy has helped with excess gas. It’s not a cure as I am still more windy than I would like but things have improved!

I don’t understand how/why you suddenly become intolerant to something as I could anything up until 4 or 5 years ago then following pelvic surgery I developed IBS. I’m still trying to work out what’s going on as there doesn’t seem to be a pattern to it but it seems to be IBSD with a very noisy gassy tummy. Stop having dairy for a few days & see if it helps.

Hello, I'm already dairy free have been for nearly 2 years! When my IBS started I found cutting out dairy helped with my IBS D, now even a tiny amount of milk in anything will set me off!! So weird how you can tolerate it for 35plus years of life then suddenly wham bam no more!! They say mine is stress related!?? I'm not so sure, I think giving birth to children is what triggered mine!!

Many thanks for your reply. Xx

I’m going to see a Gastroenterologist soon as I’m fed up with how this has taken over my life. I’ve previously had a sigmoidoscopy which didn’t show up any inflammation but I think they need to check further up the bowel as I’m convinced something is going on. Childbirth doesn’t help, I’ve had surgery to repair bowel prolapse (small & large bowel). Although my children are grown up the problems developed after reaching 50 so could be menopause related. Doesn’t explain food intolerances though. Not sure what else to suggest if you are already dairy free, I imagine you’ve already tried peppermint oil capsules etc?

I was like that a whole ago, ginger tea and turmeric tea sorted it for me. Beware the turmeric though it might interfere with other meds if you are taking any, plus it can interfere with blood thinners. Might be best to consult your doctor if you choose to try them.

I had that awful noisy stomach for many many years, and it was so bad it affected my social life as it was audible to others and sounded just like an internal fart, an explosion within! I stopped going anywhere near people in the afternoons and evenings particularly, as it was worse at those times. Ruined my social life and confidence. However, recently, my teeth began to crumble due to another condition I have and I decided that I had better stop eating nuts which had been a great favourite of mine. I also cut out fruit cake, and try only to eat home baked cakes which my lovely hubby bakes for me - no additives. The noises are now very rare - ok I get the odd digestive gurgle and maybe an odd grumble, but not those awful loud noises which were so embarrassing. The smelly wind has abated unless I do happen to eat shop bought cake or biscuits. I put a lot of my tummy troubles down to additives in food.

I agree additives in food are terrible for us! xx

Ha ha i have all the same problems im very bum vocal 😂😂. U cant get a word out of me before 11 but my bum .... 💨.

So i found that peppermint capsules 2 times a day , probiotics 2x a day, digestive enzymes 2x a day. If u keep ur gut flora healthy u should stop all symptoms. I still trump but hardly at all now and they never smell.

My osteo( who i see for digestive reasons) said it good to hear u belly grumble it means it healthy?

It moving....and working!

I also found cutting out gluten( if not try bread) and startchy stodgy food ie cake pastries breads helped me alot ... plus i lost 2 stone so it all win win

You have described the problem I have exactly! Fortunately, mine don't smell but are really, really loud & prolonged "blasts"!!!!! Nothing seems to help & goodness knows, I've tried most things over the years. Wish I had a magic wand.

Hi,

I was told by hospital consultant that I had IBS about 5 years ago after 40 years of being fine!!! I had food poisoning abroad and have never been right since. I still don't believe it's IBS. Anyways, I am like you if I eat onions, I have to stay at home because of noise/smell it's so embarrassing! Taking peppermint capsules half an hour before I eat has help me greatly and staying off onions!

Your not alone!

'IBS' doesn't really exist, it's just a blanket term that they use to cover unexplained digestive symptoms. The problem is getting to the bottom of it as the NHS stop caring once they've ruled out anything more serious. Never mind that IBS can and does ruin lives!

Gosh, I’ve been the same since I had to start meds containing lactose. I’d been dairy free for 2 years prior do it seems to be that! However, any kind of bread or goods containing yeast also set me off. I’d agree what lulububs says - I’ve been taking a mix of prebiotics, probiotics, digestive enzymes, aloe vera capsules and activated charcoal. The last one is recommended for excessive wind as it absorbs the gas and breaks it down.

Hi ! do you suggest any specific Brand for the Activated charcoal ?? because some of them are combined with other herbs that cause diahrrea ..they even write on the package ( mild laxative ) ..for healthy normal people it will be mild laxative ..but for some one like me who suffers from ibs /D ..it will cause Explosive diahrrea !!

So ..just wanted to know the good brands that will not work as a laxative just absorbing the excessive gas ??

I buy the Lifeplan Windaway activated charcoal capsules from Holland & Barrett. £4.99 for 30 capsules. One with dinner seems to be good for me so they last me a month.

On doing some research (I was going to buy more anyway) the ones by UK company Nu U look really good. A year supply of 365 capsules of 300mg strength for only £15.97. Good reviews too. Bargain! Getting some myself. :-)

I shall do some research on fermentation! Thank you! I've had celiac test, that was clear, I have two young children so fairly active! And i do yoga! I did the York intolerance test that came up with absolutely everything ! I struggled to know what to eat !! Yes I drink lots of water too 👍 Many thanks for your reply! I'm intrigued on fermentation! And think I might try some digestive enzymes! ?? Xx

claire_louise profile image
claire_louise in reply toFlik22

The York tests are very good so if they came up with lots of foods then you really should try to eliminate them all, at least temporarily. Could you see a nutritional therapist to help you work out a diet plan? A good therapist would also be able to help you find out other potential causes (e.g. Candida, bacterial imbalance etc.). Hope this helps!
