Hi Dani, Just a warning, i tried magnesium it a few verities and they were all terrible. they got me unblocked but were very vicious and i felt dreadful for the following days.
the best thing ive tried in its place is Dulcolax Pico Liquid. ( dont get dulcolax tablets )
or Sodium Picosulfate is another name for it. its nice and gentle and doesn't feel like ive been 10 rounds with Mike Tyson
I take citrate everyday 500mg but you have to trial it to see what suits you. I would start on a low dose and if you are still very constipated work your way up to a higher dose of up to 500mg if you need to. For me its been a bit of a life saver. Ive tried lots of things some of which made me very poorly especially laxatives and im not keen on those as they make the bowel disabled overtime. The only 2 things ive tried which have given me a more natural movement is the magnesium and aloe vera gel. I was on the gel for a couple of years but then read it turns the bowel black with constant use so came off that. The magnesium citrate has been a bit of a life saver. Its not a cure but I do go every couple of days or so before it was every few weeks and I was beside myself. The long term use of laxatives made the peristalic action of the bowel so weak its not very efficient anymore, doctor didnt tell me that would happen at the time. So magnesium it is overall and just laxido when im absolutely desperate.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Hi, thank you for your replies. I am not concerned about it being too strong as nothing can be at this moment. I am suffering from a paralysed bowel and even the strongest laxatives used for bowel obstructions from the hospital have no affect and I haven’t had a natural movement since last year! I’ve been surviving off private colonics and awaiting an operation. This idea was just a stab in the dark because it’s one thing I haven’t tried.
I have chronic constipation. I have been to private consultant and had the tests done. There are two new drugs that you can get on the NHS called Prucalopride and Linaclotide. The don't work like traditional laxatives, they work on the receptors in the stomach. They should give it to you if nothing else works. It is on the NICE guidelines and you should say this to your doctor. Linaclotide which I take now is amazing. Works within hours. It is not like Laxido or Movicol which does nothing for me and makes me bloated.
What I also take in between is about 600 to 1000mg of magnesium citrate or oxide on an empty stomach before bed with lots of water. This works great, naturally and is effective. My colorectal consultant recommended it as well. Look up information on magnesium and constipation. If I don't take it I don't go.
There are other magnesium products for the colon that are excellent although more expensive but worth it. They are in order of my preference, Oxypowder, Aerobic Mag07 and Colosan. You can get them on Amazon or a place called the Finchley clinic. They are very helpful and you can call for advice. Hope this helps.
Just a quick comment on using magnesium. I used it for years .( citrate). If one has any kidney issues be use to check with your dr. People with kidney disease are advised not to have excess magnesium as it is hard on the kidneys.
Thank you all for your advice, I have tried Linaclotide and movicol and unfortunately I’m not responsive to these but keen to give the magnesium a try. I believe the citrate is most people’s preferences by the sound of it so I will try and order this.
I would use natural calm it is an easy one to use and works great
