Abominal spasm with bloat

l have abominal pain today with IBS I was doing fine this morning until l ate a piece of toast with preserves on it. Still doing okay until l sat down and a little later that is when the bloating started and the pain. Can it be the white bread? Sometimes bread does not bother me. l should have known better with the bread!

Thank you very much for any answers

Hi Annie,

Looks like you may well have identified a trigger there, though it can also be related to the preserves, butter if used, any drink you had, what you were doing or thinking about (any worry or stress in there?), even who you had breakfast with, and how well you digested overnight.

To work this one out, once your digestion has calmed down (maybe tomorrow morning) try repeating the experiment eliminating any other possible triggers. Have just a piece of toast with nothing on it, and a glass of water (room temperature) and see what happens. Try to eat it alone while thinking of something pleasant or relaxing, or listening to some soothing music.

This could be a FODMAPs issue. Toast/bread has wheat which contains fructans and jams/preserves can sometimes be high frustose.

Can you try gluten free bread? I find other bread gives me a tummy ache and ongoing wheat/gluten causes fatigue and bones to ache x

I'd suspect the spread more than the bread - I stopped eating jam on my toast ! I've got my camera tests coming up and been told to eat gluten so they can see if that's a problem but now I don't get that acidic burn which I got with even the high quality jams - marmalade is a total no no but bread with dairy free spread is fine - good luck
