Constant urge to poop

Worcester25 profile image
29 Replies

I have a constant urge to continuously poop.

But once I sit on the toilet, its often just a very small BM or just a load of wind. I work from home and often find myself doing this 10-20 times a day. The discomfort goes briefly once Ive finished on the loo but then will soon return, meaning I feel the urge to re-visit the loo.

Does anyone else suffer from this?

My mornings starts with pain in my lower left abdomen. This pain usually eases by midday, but the constant visits/urge to visit the toilet happen throughout the day. My guts are constantly gurgling.,

Please, please, please can someone suggest a medication/remedy that can help me.

I have tried buscopan but found in ineffective. Just made my stools very sticky which was surprising, as I had high hopes, as it has good reviews.

Many thanks for reading. Hope to hear from you. Any suggestions desperately welcome.

What you're describing sounds like "tenesmus".

There can be various causes of it, many of which are benign, (but still troublesome) So don't be upset about the "worst case scenario" mentioned. Dr. Google loves "worst case scenarios" as we know....

You might find something helpful here:

As it can be caused by many different things, it's likely that the only way to find a starting place to treat it, is to discuss it with a doctor. Yes. I know that can be hard in the UK !! But do persist if you can. It must be quite hard living with this

I hope you find what might be causing it, and something to treat it? All the best.

Sounds like Tenesmus which I have bouts of. mine caused by internal haemorrhoids or prolapses which mimic need to go to the loo. Difficult to avoid straining which makes things worse. Mine resolved by banding or injections but do come back.

Hi I've never heard of Tenesmus but I have very similar symptoms although not on a daily basis & I can visit the loo 6 or 7 times with varying results. It's very uncomfortable & sometimes worse that the actual pain.

Yes sounds similar. Very uncomfortable. Often when I visit the toilet its just lots of wind or a few pellets of poo. Thanks for your reply Moggiedee

Hi Worcester25, I’ve not got much idea about IBS as I don’t suffer from it . Would something like Flaxseed help to bulk up your BM a-little so hopefully you won’t have the urge to try and go to the toilet so much . I just thought I’d mention it , being fiber though would it make your symptoms worse?.

Wow I’m looking on here right now because I have the same problem right now. It will go on right up until I go to bed, then start again tomorrow.

I just happened to see your post, and you sound exactly like me it drives me mad and it’s getting worse. I really wish you the best of luck sorting it,.

I’m dealing with a lot of health problems, but this one is the only one that gives me pain. Ok I can cope in the day, although my visitors don’t see much of me🙄but in the evenings when you just want to sit and watch TV,I never get to see anything all the way through. I don’t know what it is but every day around 5pm to 7pm I get anxiety attacks and a strong fear over the pain and what next do I have to deal with. My poor hubby don’t know what to say or do with me amongst all the tears, because all through our married life he’s never seen me cry so much.

Sorry all for going on a bit I got carried away, because this problem were all discussing here soo gets me down,I believe you all feel the same it’s just draining. I’ll leave it there it’s becoming like a sermon 😄.

You sound exactly like me. The only relief I get is when I go to bed. That tenesmusis is awful. I have always had since 2021. But not to the extent I get it now. The doctor has prescribed me Escitalopram and Anusol suppositories. It’s earliest days at the moment. But out of all the symptoms that I have. That’s the worse one. Turns you into a recluse. And the more you worry about it the more you’ll get it. I don’t know what else to say. I’m sorry you’re suffering so much. And good luck for the future

Breathless1943 profile image
Breathless1943 in reply toDaz1113

Hi,yes that’s my only relief sleep, but I have to have sleeping tablets to get me to sleep or I would be up all night with pain. It does also turn you into a recluse,I haven’t been out or dressed in 2 yrs now, apart from blood tests and appointments. I’ve got one tomorrow a CT scan with the dye. Then next week another one cant remember what that’s called now.But I can’t see them doing me much good because I’ve had them before. I just feel so drained with it all. And my hubby’s life has changed because of me,because I’m also on oxygen ,so he’s my carer really. Anyway Daz ( guess your names Darren because I have a son we all call Daz)I really do wish everyone on here the best of luck.

Sorry to hear that it is causing you so much pain Breathless1943. It does constantly play on my mind too and often the evenings are worse. I actually find ‘keeping busy’ very beneficial, as it takes my mind off the pain and urges. I am 43 years old and I actually find the days when I am active and taking exercise the most effective in terms of relief.

It is the quiet days when Im stuck in the house that I find the pain/urges worse. I guess there is not as much to distract me in the house compared to when I am out and about.

Good luck with the CT scan tomorrow. I hope you get some positive news soon.

I have this too. It just started about 10 days ago and following a small surgery for an inguinal hernia. But that could be coincidental.

I've been so confused and also feeling the constant pain of feeling the urge to poop. Then, visit the toilet and no poop at all. Sometimes the urge comes every 10 minutes.

For a while I thought it was constipation. And I was constipated for 7 days. It seemed a bowel obstruction was going on. Compacted stool blocking passage out. I did get a procedure for that. Afterwards, felt relief but that didn't last more than an hour.

I never expected to find this discussion here but it popped out when I finally got to HU late today.

Thank you so much for posting this. Really really disturbing to find there is no cure. I am using soluble fiber and glad that it can help. And I just started a bout of probiotics yesterday

Will try the Aflorex chewable. Thank you all so much.

Thank you for your post ForViolet. When I first visited my GP regarding my problem, my GP first thought it was constipation or possibly a bowel obstruction/compacted stool. I was prescribed Laxido.

Directions for laxido is to take 8 sachets a day for bowel obstruction. It was horrendous. Watery liquid poo for days afterwards and very sore. Did nothing to help with my pain on left hand side and just made me go to the toilet more and more. I have now been prescribed isphagia husk/fybogel to bulk up my bowel movements. Does anyone find fybogel/isphagia husk beneficial. I have been using for a short while now and can’t say its bulking up my bowel movements.

ForViolet - Good luck with the Aflorex chewable and probiotics. Please post on here if you find them beneficial.

Many thanks

Thank you for writing back. I've found soluble fiber, psyllium husk powder, in my pantry and also some prebiotic's and probiotics there.

I can't eat any food. Just juices, broth and coffee milk because I don't want to go through that awful leaking again. After the pull it out therapy, thank you ER doc, I was put on the "Golitely" which I could take half of before nausea ensued. The next entire day and night and half next day was the oozing. Still doing laundry from that.

Today I put in a call requesting an appointment with a gastroenterologist. The Urgent Care had made a referral. I guess that helps but we'll see.

I did try to get the Aflorex but it was hugely expensive, so oped for what I have.

I don't know if I want to bulk up since there seems to be a blockage near the rectum. So, anything bulked will need to be thin to get through that, around it. I think....

I have and still do suffer with you symptons and scenario uoubdescribe,, so lower left abdomen pain definitely sounds like you havevdiverticulosis, and IBS c, so first of all pain in morning probably caused from the diverticuli being inflamed, more than likely a sidevaffect ftom your diet and constipation. Also the small frequent movements , especially if pencil shaped definitely sign of diverticulosis. And having many trips to bathroom, sounds like a spastic colon , I have had all of these issues for years, and would suggest you ask dr to have a colonoscopy to diagnose properly
