Any more ideas for constipation?

Squiggle4 profile image
30 Replies

I've tried the following:

prunes - give me pain without any BM (been having 14 a day with no results lol)

psyllium - unreliable, only worked when I had coffee as well

mebeverine - made it worse

magnesium citrate - only worked for a few days and now has no effect

Any other ideas? I'm really stuck :(

Thanks x

If it's 14 days since your last bowel movement your rectum will be very impacted with hard stool. A couple of glycerin suppositories or a micro enema may shift this for you.

aha just to clarify i meant 14 prunes a day with no Bm not 14 days since my last one 😂 xx

I find Cleanseamore by RenewLife works for me. I only need to take 1 capsule but you can take up to 2 at night. I highly recommend this capsule and I have tried so many recommended items and this one really works. I have an underactive thyroid gland and I get a pain in the bottom left hand side of my stomach when I'm not regular.

Does it give you a BM reliably every day?

Yes but I try not to use it every day, maybe every third day if required.

I have a smoothie made of oats water, fruits/spinach and empty a capsule of probiotic and capsule of digestive enzyme into the mix to keep me regular. I think you need a strong laxative to clear you out first if been blocked for several days.

Good luck - constipation is miserable.

What is digestive enzyme? Do you need a prescription or is it something you can buy at a health food store?

You take them with food and they aid digestion. You can get them in any good health food shop. I use "Viridian" High Potency Digestive Aid and found they have made a big difference to processing of food and keeping me regular. I too used to suffer with constipation of 10 + days and I found the smoothie I mentioned earlier (no yoghurt or milk) really has made a difference to an easy passage!!! The oats give it a good thick consistency once whizzed up with water and the fruits.

Are you eating 30gms of fibre a day? Bet your not. Check what you are eating

I find linseeds a help as well soaked overnight in water

Try dried fruit and dates its high in fibre

Hi I agree with Grannycake, about a heaped table spoon of either milled flaxseed or chia seeds soaked in water over night, ( the chia helps me the most, but it is not very pleasant, a bit lumpy, also these two products are gentle on the tummy ). It can take a couple of weeks or more some times to feel the benefit. Hope you feel better soon.

Why presoak the flax or chia rather than just adding them to cereal, yogurt or smoothie? Does it make a difference!

A nutritionist did explain it to me, but quite a while ago, so I can't really remember, the soaked seeds form a kind of slippery gel, which I believe helps gently to get things moving again. It is best to drink lots of water through the day with this, but I guess we all do that, as we are always being told to do!!

How strong is it as a laxative? If it's just fibre i'm not sure they'll help cos I already have a lot of fibre xx

Hi the seeds are not a very strong laxative, as others have suggested that you do need some thing stronger to clear your system, then perhaps try them for a while.

Calfig? Sometime helps me. Pure orange juice too strangely enough.

Is calfig fig syrup? Does it have a lot of sugar? I want something i can have regularly that's not gonna change my sugar intake (which is partly why i don't like prunes)

If you still haven't had a BM by now I would go and get medical advise. Failing that take Movical ,more than 1. I think you can take up to 6 sachets at one time.

Firstly have a look at: healthscams.org.uk/constipa...

Figs do work very well. I remember my mother giving me syrup of figs if she thought I wasn't active enough in that direction.

You are right to be anxious about this condition as you will read. There is another aticle on this subject on the same site.

Principally you need to adjust your diet to include a good dose of fibre as one correspondent has already mentioned. Organic wheat bran splinkled lightly on each meal will certainly help in the early days. Also get on to the proper wholemeal bread not that supermarket stuff. I use the recipe at: healthscams.org.uk/bake-you... and NEVER buy bread.

I think I replied to you before about taking about 800 - 1200mg of magnesium citrate. Did you try that? If you have chronic constipation as I have, fibre etc won't help alone.

Squiggle4 profile image
Squiggle4 in reply toPat1

Yes you did - The thing is when i first tried magnesium i only needed 200-400mg a night and then it just stopped working at all.. 🤔 is 1200mg a safe dose?! sounds like a lot x

Pat1 profile image
Pat1 in reply toSquiggle4

It is fine to take that much. I would try 600mg and then 800mg.

Squiggle4 in reply toPat1

ok i took 800 last night and nothing.. so maybe ill try 1000 this evening?

Squiggle4 profile image
Squiggle4 in reply toPat1

update: i finally went after having 1600mg (including last nights dose) does this mean i have to have 1600mg every night?!

Pat1 profile image
Pat1 in reply toSquiggle4

I would alternate between 800mg and the higher dose of 1600mg

Make sure you're well hydrated. Drink water, water and more water. 2L a day is what we should be drinking.

Try Traditional Medicinal tea Smooth Move......it has been a God send to me. I drink it every other night and it works wonders!!

Eating 2 kiwis a day should help you go regularly. Sometimes 1 a day works too.

The thing that helped me was movicol. Tastes HORRIBLE but it helped clear out my system. I don't get consipated often though.
