Severe constipation

Help needed. I was diagnosed with IBS and over the last few weeks I've had terrible trouble passing a bowel moment. I went to see the nurse at my local practice today as I haven't had a proper bowel moment for 6 days. She has recommended I try suppositories as nothing else has worked. I tried using 1 earlier and for whatever reason I just couldn't insert it. My wife tried inserting it for me but I was so tense that I couldn't take it. Any tips that can help me? I'd rather try something else

I have never used them but they are supposed to be easy to insert... maybe buy a lubricating gel? Then try? Or speak to nurse again..there are many meds the nurse could give. Buy prune juice... that should help.

have you tried an enema? I can buy them in France in pharmacy so maybe you can. It’s like a tube of toothpaste with a thin nozzle you insert and thrm squeeze…..it’s seems to me to be like soapy liquid.

Other than that, magrogol. You can up the amount of sachets. Look online at what’s recommended. My doc said you can take six in a day…but start with two in the morning , next day up to three. Ask your doc . You’d be wise to stick on thrm a while that’s what my doc told me to get the flow goung.

Try those big dates? Prune juice?

It’s horrid not goung six days is too long my doc told me, anything over three you must help the flow.

I use suppositories twice a day and have done for many years. You need to moisten the tip with warm water first, if necessary a little Vaseline in the anus. Lie on your LEFT side, breathe in and then out , then insert with the middle finger of your right hand, making sure it goes in far enough. It shouldn’t hurt and for me it works in about 10 minutes. Good luck M

Please let me know which suppositories you use. Is it the glycerin ones?

You can try 800mg+ of Magnesium Oxide. I used to take these for a regular bowel movement when having to be low fibre:

myvitamins.com/vitamins/mag...

I used to start around 800mg at bed time on an empty stomach, then increment by 100mg (1 pill) each night until I got a response the next morning or the morning after. Most of it goes straight to your bowels where it draws in water to bulk out stools.

This works as a short term solution. However, you may need to increase fibre to avoid this happening in future. I have some advice about handling constipation in general. Let me know if you've not seen my posts on this before and want to know.
