Hi all, has anyone ever tried cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for IBS? My Dr recommended it but I wondered if others had found it helpful? I tried Fodmap diet but it didn't work at all for me.

CBT is a retraining of the brain. Sometimes the brain interprets a sensation as pain. Some people have had so much pain In an arm ( for example) that they want it amputated. After CBT they find there was nothing wrong with the arm. My friends daughter was in so much pain she couldn't bear to wear clothes but she is better now after CBT. Her brain was telling her touch was pain. It's not an easy journey but it can be very successful. I hope you have success with it.

I have had hypnotherapy for my ibs-d and it's brilliant! Didn't really change my symptoms or reduce the meds I take but it gave me back the confidence to leave the house in the morning and not live in fear, or meticulous planning of routes around toilet stops. I still have bad days and my tummy feels like a washing machine some days but I cope far better now. If you get a chance do it.

I also find hypnotherapy very helpful indeed. As Nathalie says it does not really change my symptoms but it does give you ways of dealing with the problems. My hypnotherapist has recently recommended Bach's Rescue Remedy for anxiety about the IBS and I am using that with good results.

Thats the same as me! I have relapses but it taught me to plan and manage my symptoms. They gave me the sessions to listen to as a relaxation technique.

I've just finished a course of CBT and it has worked really well in dealing with the anxiety I was getting with travelling as a result of IBS symptoms. If you are being offered it you might as well take it. You have nothing to lose and possibly a lot to gain.

What are your symptoms - diarrhorea or constipation.

Thanks everyone. I generally have IBS-C but sometimes D. I don't have problems going out as such but struggle to cope with thw constant pain and discomfort. It really gets me down and then of course it's a downward spiral as negativity makes it worse. I will definitely try cbt and hypnotherapy sounds promising too.
