I hope this might help another IBS sufferer. For years I have baked my own wholemeal brown bread and along with porridge every morning and fibre from vegetables thought I was eating a suitable diet. 5 months ago following an IBS flare up I switched to 100% spelt flour and followed the FODMAP diet.(Shepherd and Watson) I am not sensitive to gluten and negative for celiac. I persisted with the spelt until a week ago I switched to soft brown bought rolls and home baked white bread. The improvement has been dramatic. Now I will start re introducing the various FODMAP groups to find out if there are any intolerant foods. So there appears to be light on the horizon. Ironic that the Dietician I saw after a 3 month wait advised that I increase fibre intake.

Wholemeal Bread.
Hi
I am about to have a consultation with a Dietician who specialises in the low FODMAP diet and am keen to try it. Thank you for your help.
Hi Dotty423, Good luck with the Fodmap dietician, don't suppose she is located in the North East?
Not sure if this is on the same lines, but my mum has also been told for years to increase her fibre intake. It turns out she actually struggles to digest a lot of high-fibre foods, like veg. Anything with seeds too. She's currently on a gluten free diet that has includes a few veg, cooked very soft, and it seems to be helping her a little. But for her it's still very much a work in process and she's currently keeping a food diary to see what affects her.
Discovered something similar myself. Decided that eating wholemeal bread and having porridge or museli for breakfast would be better for me. Big mistake! I think the fibre debate is interesting. It definately has a large part to play in IBS and I think that despite a lot of the conventional wisdom, fibre can have a negative effect on IBS sufferers.
I agree completely, interesting too, that the FODMAP diet, which is so successful for many people is, for the most part, very low in fibre.
Just bought Sir John Hunters Book IBS Solutions, a rivetting read, which also emphasises Low Fibre as a significant culprit. It raises a slight dilema in specifiying low fibre diets which also contain Fodmap no go foods. However Low fibre is the way for me for the next few weeks.
