Alternatives To Sourdough Bread For IBS - Homemade

Hello to all. This is my first post. I'm a 52 year old male in The UK with Ulcerative Colitis and IBS. I think my worst symptoms are from the IBS as my UC isn't too bad and relatively under control. Worst symptoms are bloating and constant bowel noise (borbyrigmi).

My IBS seems to respond reasonably well to Low Fodmap diet. I like bread, but the shop gluten free/low Fodmap is quite expensive. I would like to bake my own bread, but as I'm quite busy, the sourdough seems a lot of work and takes days plus a special jar of some mixture that you have to feed. Is there another low Fodmap bread I can bake myself that's much less work?

Any ideas appreciated.

Hi, I see you are in the uk. Try the part baked sourdough baguettes from Aldi. Think they are 69p each. I stock up and take one to work for lunch every day. They last for ages as they are only part baked and you finish by baking them in the oven for 10 mins.

Just a little note to be aware that most sourdough bread sold in supermarkets isn't really sourdough, it just has some sourdough added for flavouring but uses normal yeast - so do check labels carefully if avoiding telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/0...

Hi you can order decent bread on line which they deliver think they do part also?

In london we have quite a few places that make proper/real sourdough plus rye.

Waitrose sells proper sourdough bread one they bring in is Gails

abelandcole.co.uk/bakery/br...

waitrose.com/ecom/shop/brow...

Just do a net search shows up many places that make real sourdough

I love bread too but supermarket wholemeal / granary stuff is terrible and Gail’s is pricey - any suggestions people ?! 🤔

I’m not gluten intolerant although I thought for a while I was. I hated the gf bread in shops. Now I make bread with soured milk, flour & baking powder. It takes just a few minutes to mix up. My tummy is fine on it!! Doubt that will help you but just thought I’d share!!

Hi, I'm interested in your bread, do you use yeast or just the baking powder.

No yeast!!! Literally flour, baking powder & gone off milk.

So, do you buy soured milk or just leave your own milk to go off a bit? If the latter is the case, how long do you leave it?

in reply toMaureen1958

My mum (god rest her soul) used always say ‘the more gone off the better!’ I buy 2 pints of semi skimmed milk for baking & for visitors tea (we only drink skimmed) and just use that when it’s gone off!! It looks disgusting but makes nice bread!! (In my opinion). My husband makes a nice bread using a James Martin recipe he found online. He uses soured milk, baking powder & bicarb.
