Brown/seeded bread

Decided to swap white bread to brown then seeded brown bread but oh how I have suffered! I have IBS D which has been ok ish recently but the flare ups now have been horrendous, cramps, wind and running to loo. Would it be the change in bread causing this, is brown/seeded a no no??? I would be grateful to know if anyone had similar experience.

Hi!

After reading Professor Peter Whorwell's book "Take Control of your IBS" I would say yes the change in bread could be the cause. There is a chapter on fibre that is easy to understand and makes sense to me. Certain fibre can have a laxative effect so why would someone like me that has IBS-D want to have more bowel movements? As regards seeds they can give me indigestion. Hope this helps

Yes. I would switch to your former bread, or try sourdough bread.

I don't know the answer but have just started eating very seeded bread. I will let you know if the ,,"runs" return.

I too have a problem with wholemeal bread/seeded bread, I stick with Danish white or farmhouse white. Even some white bread can cause a flare-up, because of containing lactose or oats or both! Ultimately baking my own is safe but sometimes it can be too much trouble. Wishing you well! x

I have used gluten free bread since i found out i had IBS it stopped a lot of the boating i was getting . It does have seeds on it. You can buy it without seeds. But i feel in my case it was a good move.

I thought gluten free was recommended with IBS ... i could be wrong. Good luck to you.

Yes, I would say so. The more insoluble fibre the worse for ibs d. White bread or even wholemeal can be okay but never wholegrain and seeded. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you I shall keep that in mind x

Brown bread is highly likely to contain the roughage that is stripped out to make white bread. It is an insoluble fibre, whereas what you need as an IBS-D sufferer is soluble fibre. So suggest switch back to white bread, but look to rye based products, Ryvita for instance. Also add Linseed to your meals/drinks/soups. Google other 'insoluble fibre foods' that you might like.

I found that by going gluten free over 3 weeks ago, my symptoms have reduced by about 50%

I think it will be trial and error with me with certain things. x

Yes go back to white bread ,white rice spaghetti etc sometimes I use spelt flour but I make my own bread then I know what is in it. Also I went to the clinic saying how healthy I was having fibre and was told that was the worse thing to eat with mt IBS..

Hi, I’m not sure either way about the brown/seeded/white bread thing (I too have IBS D), but I have found that Fybogel helps when I have a flare-up. It’s soluble fibre and seems to help ‘mop-up’ the fluids in bm’s.

A lot of people think it’s a laxative, but it isn’t; it’s a fibre that helps regulate bm’s either way - available without prescription and not too expensive - worth a try!

Thank you, I will look into that as I have tried a few things when flare up but nothing really helps. x

Definitely YES ! it is the brown bread which is big NO NO for us ibs / D sufferers .. my mother's friend who also has ibs was even hospitalised when she ate only one round piece of brown bread !! she said i almost died !!

just remember No browns for future ..either Brown bread or brown rice or brown pasta ..All bran flakes or cereals ..All of this Brown family are high in fibers which our over sensitive digestive system can't tolerate .

Take care 🌸

Thank you, I didn't know All bran was a no no too! Good way of remembering things, brown family. They would all be more healthy as well so I won't have know. x

Unfortunately in our case ..we don't follow the healthy protocol ..we follow what our guts can accept and digest without horrible reaction 😳 this can be learnt by trial and error and can greatly differ from one person to another ..it's an exhausting puzzle only we " not even Doctors " can pinpoint what best suit us by keeping a food diary and watching our personal gut reaction to what we eat .

like for example fruits and vegetables are considered healthy , but for me it simply means " one moment in the mouth = a life time in the bathroom followed by a Bed day "" 😓😓

I agree, brown bread is bad for ibs. Just having a bad few days with ibsd. It's been soul destroying. You spend so much time in bathroom. Took imodium just to get out of house yday and be normal!!! Trying to lose weight but veg is sometimes impossible - poop is endless!
