urea and dementia
answer from Prof Cooper Dear Chris, Thanks for your kind message. I am unaware of an association between hydroxyurea and dementia. What we have been seeing in dementia (Alzheimer’s & Huntington’s so far) are very high levels in the brain itself – much higher apparently than in the rest of the

PV queries
My Haematologist is suggesting that I start on
hydroxycarbamide
and Allopurinol for gout -like pain in hands and toes. (I have had venesection 5 times and take aspirin daily). Are these medicines well tolerated by others with PV?

New to this
Newly diagnosed with MPN and started on Hydroxyurea 500mg twice a day. How soon do side effects start? Hate that I may have them bit want to be prepared. I have been fatigued for so long, high platelets??, and hopeful this drug won't compound this. So appreciate voices of experience. Thank each of

Hello from a newbie with E.T.
I am taking
Hydroxycarbamide
and aspirin. I go back to the consultant next week who was very good and made a point of telling me this was not a terminal illness and not to get hung up on the word 'cancer'.

Are patients with PV entitled for Free Prescriptions?
I've been managing my condition using
Hydroxycarbamide
and Clopidogrel and I always paid for my medicines. However after checking on NHS website I realised that patients with PV might be entitled for free prescriptions.

First venesecton
I've been on
hydroxycarbamide
four days a week for a couple of years yet I've now got too many red blood cells. As a result I'm having venesection tomorrow. Anyone else get a spike in their blood cell levels from time to time?

Hydroxycarbamide Side Effects
I was diagnosed with ET last month and am on low dose Aspirin and
Hydroxycarbamide
500mgs. Have only been on the Hydroxy for 3 days and am pleasantly surprised -no sickness etc. However, my brain feels a bit foggy so am feeling slightly detached. Will this go- any tips? Thanks. Suzy

ET was the surprise of my year
I'm now on
hydroxycarbamide
(450mg per week), which I seem to be tolerating well. So far so good. It's great to have access to this forum and I look forward to communicating with fellow sufferers.

What a great way to end the week!!
Hydroxycarbamide
has really done its job well (1 per day Mon-Fri, " per day Sat & Sun), and so far without any significant side effects. I have been told to stay on the same dosage of HC for 3 months, until the next review, which is fine by me.

First month of the rest of my life done!
And my platlet count has dropped to 296 from over 840. Has anyone else ever had such dramatic results? I take 81mg aspirin and 1 mg folic acid once a day, and 500 mg Hydroxyurea twice a day.

Does Hydroxycarbamide cause excessive wind
Since I was put on
Hydroxycarbamide
last November, I also went on an elimination diet of no tea, coffee, sugar, gluten or dairy. I started to lose weight which delighted me but since then I have suffered from constant flatulence, in other words I pop number 3's all the time.

Hydroxycarbamide side effects
My partner commenced
hydroxycarbamide
about a month ago and although he has not suffered any major side effects he has just started to get a few mouth ulcers. Has anybody else had this reaction and if so what did they find helpful to treat them.

Excellent supplement for those on Hydroxyurea
Hi all I have been on Hydrea for 6 years and it always freaks me out to be taking chemo meds daily. I had the genetic testing done to see where I have snips in my genes and where I need help processing fats/toxins etc and the dietician I worked with strongly recommended this supplement. It's basically

Phlebotomy or Hydroxyurea
I have PV Jak2 positive. My blood counts have been very stable since 2012 so I have not been on any medications or other treatments. In July my counts elevated some. Hematologist had me return in three months to be checked again. They went up a bit more. Had blood work again yesterday. Platelets

My Haemoglobin, Haematocrit and platelet counts are all higher now than they were 7 months ago when I first went onto

Hydroxycarbamide and Flu Vaccine
Hi everyone, I have just started taking
Hydroxycarbamide
and am into the sixth week (500mg three times a week) of treatment. I have been told that I can have the flu vaccination whilst taking
Hydroxycarbamide
but I am unsure as to whether I can have the vaccination so early on in my treatment.

ET with CALR+ type 2
Hi Fellows, I am 29 years old and I have been diagnosed recently with ET, CALR+. It was a really hard period the last months, as I was trying to cope with all the tests, outcomes and struggling to understand my condition. Looking back to my blood tests it seems that I might have it for at least 3
